Course Learning Objectives

• (1) Describe the functions of various mechanical


elements in a machine.
(2) Explain the relation between properties and
dimensions of components
(3) Analyze and quantify the forces, stresses and related
parameters which are necessary to design shafts,
couplings, keys & joints,
(4) Demonstrate ability to develop designs for various
mechanical components
PART A - THEORY
Unit – 1
Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering Design:

1)Mechanical engineering design


a) Types of design
b) Standards and Codes
c) Factor of safety
d) Material selection.

2) Static Stresses:
a) Static loads
b) Normal, Bending
c) Shear and Combined stresses
d) Theories of failure.
e) Stress concentration and determination of stress concentration factor.

Unit -2
Design for Impact and Fatigue Loads

a) Impact stress due to Axial, Bending and Torsional loads.

b) Fatigue failure:
i) Endurance limit
ii) S-N Diagram
iii) Low cycle fatigue, High cycle fatigue
iv) modifying factors: size effect, surface effect.

c) Stress concentration effects


i) Notch sensitivity
ii) Fluctuating stresses
iii) Goodman and Soderberg relationship
iii) Stresses due to combined loading
iv) cumulative fatigue damage.

1) Design of Shafts,

i) Torsion of shafts
ii) Design for strength and rigidity with steady loading
iii) ASME codes for power transmission shafting
iv) Shafts under combined loads.

2) Joints
v) Design of Cotter
vi) Design of Knuckle joints

3) Couplings
i) Rigid Couplings
ii) Flexible couplings
iii) Flange coupling
iv) Bush and Pin type coupling.

4) Keys
i) Design of keys - Rectangular and Square sections

Unit-4
1) Riveted Joints
i) Rivet types
ii) Rivet materials
iii) Failures of riveted joints
iv) Joint Efficiency
v) Boiler Joints

2) Welded Joints

i) Types of welded joints


ii) Strength of butt and fillet welds
iii)Welded brackets with Transverse weld
iv) Welded brackets with Parallel fillet weld.

1) Threaded Fasteners
i) Stresses in threaded fasteners
ii) Effect of initial tension
iii) Design of threaded fasteners under static loads.

2) Power Screws
i) Types of power screws
ii) Torque required to raise/lower the loads
iii) Efficiency and self-locking
iv) Design of power screws for C-clamps, Machine vice, sluice gates, etc.

UNIT-1, UNIT-4 and UNIT- 5 should not have any choice.  

UNIT -2 and UNIT -3 should have an internal choice.

Both the questions should be of the same complexity in terms of COs and
Bloom’s taxonomy level.
