What are genes

•Genes are instructions that dictate how a person’s body is

made

•They let the body know what characteristics a person will

receive from their parents, such as physical features

•The two most basic influences on social behavior are genes

and the environment around a person
Hypothesis
● A formula known as heritability estimate can give
information about how much of an impact genes have on a
behavior in a certain environment.
● I hypothesize that, a person’s genes are the base of their
character and it definitely affects their way of thinking and
their response but what makes the difference is thir

The process on how Genes Influence Behavioral Traits

•No single gene can be traced to or entirely responsible for complicated

behaviours or specific traits

•One gene may influence many different characteristics for behaviour

•Many genes could work together to influence most behaviours
•A particular behaviour trait of a person is usually a result of hundreds of
genes working together
Other Influences of Genes on Behaviour
•Through heredity, mental disorders or personality traits
may be passed down for generations

•Just like the example in the slide below, certain genes may
or may not be triggered depending on a person’s lifestyle and
upbringing
Can Genes Predict Behaviour?
•A person’s environment is as significant as inherited genes when
influencing their behavior

•Factors such as parenting, schooling, trauma and the prenatal

environment all play a crucial role in developing their social behaviour

•Environmental factors and lifestyle play a large role in all sorts of

development, such as height and weight
Reflection
•Studying the ratio of genetic and environmental influences on
behaviour can help deepen our understanding of the social work.

•With medical and technological advances, researchers would be able

to analyze specific genes and associate them with specific
behaviours.

•I believe that the science behind behavioral processes could advance

tremendously by studying this topic and finding out more about it.
