Invitation Letters: It is known to us that invitations on any happy occasion surely play a prominent part in

our social life. Letters of invitations are sent to others in order to establish, develop, strengthen, and
maintain our social contact with one another. This is how an atmosphere of brotherliness is brought into
existence for the larger interest of the society as a whole.
An invitation letter is basically written and given by a person to another person or organization when he,
she or they are conducting a particular function and want the presence of the person or organisation
there. An invitation letter many a times is more of an appeal letter as the writer appeals to the person to
whom he/she is sending the letter to definitely arrive for the event.
We send letters of invitation to our relatives, friends ,admirers, acquaintances etc. on a number of special
occasions. ( The following are some of the occasions when letters of invitations are written.)
Marriage party
Reception party
Lunch party
Tea party
Announcement of engagement,
Birthday party
Dinner party
Religious ceremony,
• Dance party
• Social and cultural functions
• Inauguration ceremonies
• Birth of a child
• Annual Day functions in schools colleges, universities, clubs, associations and so
on.
• It is to be borne in mind that invitation letters are of two kinds:
• They are formal invitation letters and informal invitation letters.
• Informal invitation letters:
Informal invitation letters are penned and answered in the first person. Really
speaking, the style of writing informal letters of invitation is almost like the
ordinary friendly letters.
• Features of an informal invitation are as follows-
• They are written to friends, relatives and acquaintances.
• They follow the pattern of ordinary personal letters.
• They are written in first/second person.
• The style and tone is relaxed and informal.
• Different tenses are used as per the demand.
• The letter can be elaborative explaining the details of the event

Dear Father,
Our Second Term Exam ends next week and the school will break up for winter holidays on the 14th of
Poush. The students of our class have arranged an educational trip to Chitwan National Park and
Lumbini, the birth place of Lord Buddha. Our class teacher and the other two teachers have agreed to
accompany us. A charge of Rs. 500 has been fixed to meet all the expenses. It will include the bus fare,
and board and lodging expenses. The school, too, will bear half of the expenses. The trip promises to
be of great educational value to us. It will add to our general information and teach us many useful
things. My roommate, along with my other friends, is also joining the trip. I, therefore, request you to
kindly permit me and send me Rs. 500 at the earliest so that I can make the payment to the teacher in
charge to confirm my participation. I assure you, I shall give you no cause of complaint. I hope you
