All About the KKK

 KKK- Kataastasang Kagalang- Galangang Katipunan ng Mga Anak ng Bayan


 It was a revolutionary society that espoused independence and freedom for
the Philippines
 It main objectives- freedom development for the Filipinos
 It was established by Andres Bonifacio on July 7, 1892 in Tondo Manila
 It was a secret society against Spaniard
 The process of recruitment followed the Masonic initiation rites
 The men, gathered around the flickering table lamp, signed their membership
papers with their blood.
 The Central Government of the Katipunan was vested in a Kataastaasang
Sangunian (Supreme Council).
 Each Province, there was a Saunguniang Bayan (provincial council)
 Each town , has Sanguniang Balangay
 There were 3 grades of membership- 1st Katipun (associate) wore black mask
at the meeting, his password is Anak ng Bayan , 2nd Kawal (soldier) wore
green mask. Password Gomburza, 3rd Bayani- (patriot) wore red mask
password Rizal.

 Women members- not required to signed with their blood- Gregoria de Jesus,
(lakambini) Benita Rodriguez, Josefa and Trinidad Rizal,
 Knowing the importance of a primer to teach the members of the society its
ideals, they prepared Guidelines
 Emilio Jacinto- wrote Kartilla – meant a primer for grade school students.
 The Kartilla consisted of thirteen teachings principles
 Bonifacio wrote a Decalogue or The commandments titled (Katungkulang
Gawain ng Mga anak ng Bayan. The rules incude:
 Love of God
 Love of the country
 Love of fellowmen
 Diligence in work
 Sharing of one’s means with poor
 Punishment scoundrel and traitor
 And the guarding of the mandates and aims of the KKK.
About the Author of the Kartilla

 Emilio Jacinto- December 15, 1875 Tondo Manila


 Parent- Mariano Jacinto (father) bookkeeper and Josefa Dizon (mother)
 Living a life of poverty
 Get good education- Elem. (private) Secondary (Colegio de San Juan de
Letran) Law- university of Santo Thomas
 He developed a love of reading and improved skill in Spanish
 Joined the Katipunan in 1894 at the age of 18 & took the symbolic name
Pingkian, Pen-name Dimas Ilaw and he developed his nationalistic ideals
 He served Katipunan in different capacities such as secretary, fiscal, editor,
appointed General and served as an adviser to the Supremo
About the Text
 According to Jim Richardson- the Kartilla is the best known of all known
Katipunan text.
 It was printed as a small pamphlet that was distributed to the members of
KKK.
 Kartilla – derived from the Spanish Cartilla – primer for grade school.
 It served as the primary lessons for the members of the KKK.
 Kartilla presents not only the teaching for the neophyte but also the guiding
principles of the society.
 Its aim the attainment of freedom
 It is not just a document, its importance today is predicated on the teaching
that embodied the moral and nationalistic principles of a nation.
Proclamation of the Philippine Independence

 On June 10, 1896 Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo issued decree appointing his general
of War Ambrosio Rianzales Bautista to write the Act of Declaration of the
Independence.
 Its commenced with the condition of the country during Spanish colonial
period.
 The document mentioned abuse, inequalities, connivance of civil guard,
selfish and avaricious, execrable work of friar and Spanish leaders.
 Sixteen (16) pages document that contained the aspiration of freedom, the
sacrifices made, and the revolution that resulted from it .
 The text of this declaration that was read on June 12, 1898, in Kawit Cavite
in the afternoon declaration of independence. The document is short 2,000
words
 With 177 signed or witnessed
 From the proclamation proceeded with brief historical overview of the
Spanish occupation since Magellan’s arrival until the Philippine revolution.
 The document narrates the spread of the movement like an electric spark
through different towns and provinces like Bataan, Pampanga, Batangas,
Bulacan, Laguna and Morong
 The document also narrates the Cavite Mutiny, the Martyred of native priest
Jose Burgos, Mariano Gomez and Jacinto Zamora
 The proclamation also invokes the established republic would be led under
Emilio Aguinaldo
 Another details in the proclamation is the explanation of the Philippine flag
The white triangle – Katipunan society, 3 stars- Luzon, Panay and Mindanao,
the 8 rays of the sun- manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan,
Laguna and Batangas
 The color red, blue and white- commemorate flag of USA and gratitude
toward great nation
About the Author of the Proclamation
 Emilio Aguinaldo- born on March 22, 1869 in Kawit Cavite
 Parent- Carlos Aguinaldo (father) Trinidad Famy (mother) 2nd to the youngest
children
 The Aguinaldos were wealthy and influecial family
 His father served gobernadorcillo for several term
 After death of his father, Emilio assisted his mother in the family business
 Followed in his Father’s footstep he was chosen Capitan Municipal of Kawit in
1894
 Joined in the Katipunan choosing the name Magdalo
 When revolution began, problem arise because faction (Magdiwang &
Magdalo)
 Election for a Pamahalaang Panghihimagsik Aguinaldo elected as president on
March 22, 1897.
 Aguinaldo and his officers went unto exile in Hong Kong in December 1897.
 Spanish – American War eventually changed Philippine history, after America
won the battle.
 Aguinaldo returned to the Philippine and announced the resumption of the
revolution.
 Filipino realized that America were become new colonizers
 After the Spanish defeat in 1898, the US began to send fresh troops to the
Philippines
 Aguinaldo convened a congress in Malolos,Bulacan in which the delegation
wrote and established Republic of the Philippines in January 1899
 Aguinaldo die at the age of 94, on feb.6, 1964
