 TRANSITIONAL STAGE

 -Development of intimate relationships with other people

 -Involves merging of values

 -Adjustments to each other’s routines (sleeping, eating, chores,


etc.), sexual and economic aspects.

EXPANDING FAMILY STAGE

 -Families are created,

 -New members are added, and

 -Roles and relationships increase


z
ESTABLISHMENT STAGE
Marriage & Family

 -Involves choosing a partner and setting up a household

 -Individuals shift from living independently to learning to share


and maintain an interdependent relationship.

CHILDBEARING STAGE
Early Childbearing Family

 -Birth or adoption of a first child which requires economic and


social role changes 

 -New parents are now faced with childcare responsibilities

 -Develop and adjust to a plan that leaves young children in the


care of both or at least one parent

CHILDREARING STAGE
Family w/ Pre-school Children

 -Children at this stage demand a great deal of time related to


growth and development needs and safety considerations

 -Childrearing families are often pressured for time

CHILDREARING STAGE
Family w/ School Age Children

  -Socialization of children is a major task of child-rearing 

  -Parents at this stage have important responsibility of 


preparing their children to be able to function in a complex world
while at the same time maintaining their own satisfying marriage
relationship

CHILDREARING STAGE
Family w/ Adolescent Children

 -A family allows the adolescents more freedom and prepare


them for their own life 

 -Communication is a developmental task for all members

CONTRACTING FAMILY STAGE

 -The family becomes smaller

 -Parents must adjust to new roles as individuals

CHILD LAUNCHING STAGE

 -Stage when children leave to set their own household

 -This stage begins when the first child leaves home to live
independently and ends when the last child leaves home

 -The length of this period varies

POSTPARENTING STAGE

 -Family returns to two partners nuclear unit

 -Begins when the last child leaves home and continues until
retirement or death of a partner

 -Fewer demands allows more time to enjoy life

AGING STAGE

 -Older adults may decide to relocate

 -Pension is usually insufficient 

 - Older adultd will start experiencing physical deterioration

 -Planning for legal affairs
