GUIDELINES AND

POLICIES
SCIENCE CLASSES IN THE NEW NORMAL
LEARNING TASK
After reading the guidelines, answer the following questions and be ready with
them on our scheduled sync classes next week:
1. What is your individual plan so that you will be able to cope with the demands of
this new style of learning?
2. How can you make your plan work effectively and how can other members of
your household help you?
3. What are possible hindrances to make your plan work well?
Your answers to these questions will help you and your classmates, too. Let us talk
about them when we meet.
Reflect and plan well. ;)
• Thisset of guidelines and policies is intended for Science 8
(Acacia) and Science 10 (Einstein and Galileo) classes of Bicol
University, College of Education – INTEGRATED LABORATORY
SCHOOL – HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT for the first semester
of School Year 2020-2021.
• This is intended to lead the students in walking through the
different modalities to be used in learning Science 8 and Science
10.
• This
is also aimed at answering some recurring questions that
loom in the students’ minds in the process of adjusting to the
new normal.
Q1. What learning modalities will be used?
A1. The different modalities can be categorized into two types: the
SYNCHRONOUS and the ASYNCHRONOUS modes of teaching/learning.
SYNCHRONOUS means interacting with the teacher on a “real time” basis. This
means that both the teacher and the students will “meet” online thru different
platforms at a particular scheduled time. In Science 8 and 10, this can be done via
Google Meet (where virtually “seeing each other” will happen) and/or thru the
Group Chat created for the class where the teacher and students won’t “see”
each other virtually but will interact at the same time. Synchronous meetings
will only be adopted when it is very necessary. This is also going to be done only
during the scheduled time for the subject (the schedule for your respective sync
classes was already included in the first ppt sent in your group chat).
Most often, the ASYNCHRONOUS mode will be used in your classes.
This means that tasks will be given to you via Group Chat or the Google
Classroom. You will perform the tasks during the scheduled time of your
Science classes. Upon finishing the tasks within the period of time given, you
are going to submit your outputs to the platform as directed by your teacher.
This learning modality requires a lot of self-discipline. You need to manage
your time properly by following the class schedule so that assignments/tasks
won’t pile up.
Remember, you will be working at your own pace, so stay focused and
determined.
Q2. Is there any book prescribed for
Science?
A2. There is no specific textbook to be used in Science 8 and 10. Books published
and that are available in the market contain almost the same contents. Basically,
they all have the MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES identified by
the Department of Education for this school year. You can use any book as a
reference.
However, if you don’t have any book to use, you don’t have to worry because
your teacher will provide the self-directed modules that you will need to learn
the competencies.
Q3. How am I going to be graded?
A3. Just like in the “old normal”, you will be graded according to how you do the
tasks given to you.
Written outputs will be graded based on your understanding about the
different topics. These will be submitted online on dates specified by your teacher.
Performance outputs like projects and activities will also be required. Group
tasks can still be done along with individual activities.
Reasonable time will be given to you in order to finish them. As we go along
our lessons, we will be able to find a way to make things as plausible and easy as
possible.
A synchronous meeting will be considered for the quarterly assessment.
Q4. Are we still going to perform science
experiments?
A4. Yes. Even demonstration lessons will still be done by your teacher. This is
going to be in the form of a video which will be sent to you.
Non-dangerous and fun science activities will still be given to you especially
those that would only need materials found in the confines of your homes. Along
with the experiments will be activity sheets that you will answer for submission.
Science activities will fall under your performance outputs.
Q5. How can I have optimal learning
under this ‘new normal’?
A5. First, set your minds that it is no longer vacation time. School year 2020-2021
has already started. This is quite difficult because of the very long school break. But
you are enrolled, so you are now a student once again.
Second, adjust your perceptions. The school year might have started but in a
remarkably different situation. Don’t expect too much, yet, don’t be listless. With
the new normal, school setting becomes technology-dependent and home-based.
In as much as your teacher would want to give you the best learning method
possible using the different online platforms, there is an inescapable fact that
connectivity is imperfect along with power interruptions. Add to this the differences
between the living status/condition among the students. Thus, you are expected to
be more self-dependent.
Third, always be updated. The different platforms created and prepared like the
Group Chat and the Google Classroom are the best way to keep abreast of what’s
going on in your Science class. If, for some reasons, you were not able to keep up
with the given tasks, do not hesitate to communicate with your teacher. (fb
messenger: Carina Rosin Altavano; gmail1: carina06081972@gmail.com; and
gmail2: craltavano@bicol-u.edu.ph )
Fourth, attend your sync classes/meetings. This will allow your teacher to know
you better and thus, make things easier to address concerns that will help boost
your learning.
Fifth, observe proper decorum and netiquette. Online modalities may trigger
some excitement and some might even associate it with ‘gaming’. This is high time
for you to behave properly and explore more things that the computer can offer.
And lastly, don’t forget to inject fun. The best way to learn is to have a happy
and cheerful disposition.
