Why only EIGRP IPv6?
• It is CISCO Systems proprietary.
• Increment in the number of Internetwork user.
• Internetworking is highly commercialized and evergreen.
• Play a mission critical role in today’s business.
• It is regarded as the best IGP by CISCO Systems.
• It supports the new version of IP Addressing i.e. IPv6.
• It brings a fast convergence.
• It is a good in fault tolerance.
Objectives
• Explain the Nuts and Bolts.
• Explain the Features of EIGRP for IPv6.
• Packet Header of EIGRP IPv6.
• Describe the concept of DUAL.
• Explain the Working of DUAL (using FMS).
• Calculate the EIGRP for IPv6 Composite Metric.
• How to Configure EIGRP.
• How to Verify EIGRP.
Introduction
• Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol for Internet
Protocol version 6(EIGRP for IPv6) is a distance vector,
classless routing protocol that was released in 2003 with
IOS 9.41.
• It is Cisco proprietary protocols and only operate on
Cisco routers.
• The main purpose in Cisco's development of EIGRP for
IPv6 was to create a classless version of IGRP and to
support new addressing scheme for IPv6.
Elements Of Computer Network:
Directly Connected & Remote Network

Remote Network
For Router R1 and R2
Dynamic Routing
Function of Dynamic Routing :
• Automatic Network discovery.
• Updating and maintaining routing tables.
Best Path Selection
Metrics used in IP routing protocols include:

• 1). Hop count.

• 2). Bandwidth.
• 3). Load.
• 4). Delay.
• 5). Reliability.
IGP vs. EGP Routing Protocols
IGP vs. EGP Routing Protocols

(Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol for Internet Protocol version 6)
Features of EIGRP for IPv6
• Reliable Transport Protocol (RTP).
• Bounded and Partial Updates.
• Diffusing Update Algorithm (DUAL).
• Establishing Adjacencies and Topology Tables.
• Supports Internet Protocol version 6(IPv6).
Encapsulated EIGRP Message
• Data Link Frame.
• IP Packet.
• EIGRP Packet
• TLV
Packet Types
• Hello Packet
• Update Packet
• Ack Packet
• Query Packet
• Reply Packet
Diffusing Update Algorithm (DUAL)
• Diffusing Update Algorithm (DUAL) is the convergence
algorithm used by EIGRP
• DUAL determines the best loop-free path and loop-free
backup paths by using the following:
Successor
Feasible Distance (FD)
Feasible Successor (FS)
Reported Distance (RD) or Advertised Distance (AD)
Feasible Condition or Feasibility Condition (FC)
Working Of DUAL
– After router has received all updates from directly
connected neighbors, it can calculate its DUAL
• 1st metric is calculated for each route
• 2nd route with lowest metric is designated
successor & is placed in routing table
• 3rd feasible successor is found
– Criteria for feasible successor: it must have
lower reported distance to the destination than
the installed route’s feasible distance.
– Feasible routes are maintained in topology
table
Working Of DUAL (using FSM)
EIGRP for IPv6 Composite Metric
Factors to calculate Metric:
• Bandwidth
• Delay
• Reliability
• Load
Configuring EIGRP
The Network Command

• Functions of the network

command
– Enables interfaces to
transmit & receive EIGRP
updates
– Includes network or subnet
in EIGRP updates
Verifying EIGRP
• We use the show ip eigrp neighbors command to view
the neighbor table and verify that EIGRP has established
an adjacency with its neighbors.
Advantages of EIGRP for IPv6
• Determines the best loop-free path and loop-free backup
paths.
• Classless routing protocol.
• Support new addressing scheme for IPv6.
• Provide fast convergence.
• Consumes comparatively less bandwidth.
• It may provide fault tolerance during network breakdown.
Disadvantage of EIGRP for IPv6
• It is Cisco proprietary protocols and only operate on
Cisco routers.
Summary
– EIGPR uses RTP to transmit & receive EIGRP
packets
– EIGRP has 5 packet type:
 Hello packets
 Update packets
 Acknowledgement packets
 Query packets
 Reply packets
– Supports VLSM.
Summary
• EIGRP metrics include
– Bandwidth (default)
– Delay (default)
– Reliability
– Load
• DUAL
– Purpose of DUAL
 To prevent routing loops
Summary
• Choosing the best route
– After router has received all updates from directly
connected neighbors, it can calculate its DUAL
 1st metric is calculated for each route
 2nd route with lowest metric is designated
successor & is placed in routing table
 3rd feasible successor is found
– Criteria for feasible successor: it must have
lower reported distance to the destination than
the installed route’s feasible distance.
