TKT overview
What is the Teaching Knowledge Test
(TKT)?
The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a test developed by Cambridge
ESOL for teachers of English to speakers of other languages. TKT tests
candidates’ knowledge of concepts related to language, language use and the
background to and practice of language teaching and learning.
 TKT consists of three core modules which can be taken together, or separately,
 in any order.
 The content of TKT is tested by means of objective tasks, such as matching and multiple choice.
 Each module consists of 80 questions.
 The exam lasts for 80 minutes.
 A candidate is allowed to take a few modules within one day with a 30 minutes’ break.
 TKT is graded with bands (1-4): Band 1 (0-15 points)- limited knowledge, Band 2 (16-39)basic
but systematic, Band 3 (40-67)deep knowledge of TKT content, Band 4 (68-80)extensive
knowledge of TKT content.
 There are no entry requirements, such as previous teaching experience and/or teaching or language
qualifications, for TKT, but candidates should have at least an intermediate level of English.

TKT: YL is an exam for teachers and classroom assistants who want to teach English to young
learners. It tests knowledge of concepts related to young learner learning and development,
and knowledge of young learners from a teaching perspective, including the planning, teaching
and assessment of young learners’ work.
TKT CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)
It covers the planning, teaching and assessment of CLIL. It also focuses on teachers’

Module 3
Managing the teaching and learning processes
 1. Teachers’ and learners’ language in the classroom (40 questions – 6 tasks)
a) Using language appropriately
b) Sequence of instructions
c) Identification of the functions of language learning
d) Categorizing mistakes

h) Giving feedback
Classroom functions are purposes for which we
use language in the classroom. Exponents are
phrases which are used for a particular
function.
 Classroom functions examples:
 Instructing(Open your books on page 7)
 Eliciting (What can you see in the picture?)
 Acknowledging(The teacher nods her head or say ‘yes’
 Conveying meaning(something which is huge is something very, very big, an elephant is huge)
 Narrating: Last year I went to France for my summer holiday…
 Praise: Very good, Well done, That’s excellent work.
 Prompting: It’s the opposite of big or huge. It is very small. It begins with a T.
 Recast: Student: I’m go to the bank today. Teacher: I’m going to the bank today
 Simplifying: ‘I’d like you to look at the second exercise on the right there, exercise number 2 on page 12 of your
coursebook’. To simplify this, the teacher could say ‘Open your book. Look at exercise 2, page 12, please’.
 Checking learning. (Do you understand?)
 Correcting (S: We is studying English now.T: Mind grammar.S: We are studying now.
 Modelling (T: I am going to go out tomorrow. I am going to. S: I am going to)
 Encouraging (Come on)
 Nominating (Sam, it’s your turn)
 Getting learner’s attention(Look at the board!)
For questions 1–9, match each example of teachers’ classroom language with its function listed A–E. You
need to use some options more than once. Functions
A giving instructions B correcting student errors C eliciting vocabulary D narrating E explaining about
language
