INTRODUCTION
• Connections between beams and columns are
perhaps the most common structural
connection type. A wide range of different
types are used, and these include fin plates,
end plates, web or flange cleats, and haunched
connections
DEFINITION OF COLUMN

A structural member subjected principally to

compressive stresses. Concrete columns may be
unreinforced, or they may be reinforced with
longitudinal bars and ties (tied columns) or with
longitudinal bars and spiral steel (spiral-reinforced
columns). Sometimes the columns may be a
composite of structural steel of cast iron and
concrete.
DEFINITION OF BEAM
• A beam is a structural element that is capable
of withstanding load primarily by resisting
bending. The bending force induced into the
material of the beam as a result of the
external loads, own weight, span and external
reactions to these loads is called a bending
moment.
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENT

DURABILITY
- Should be durable for the expected life of the
building
- Require little maintenance or repair
STABILITY
- Stability can be defined as the ability of a
structure to resist overall movement and its
part without excessive deformation.
- Remain horizontal when under dead load,
static load, and live load.
- In case of ground floor slab its stability will be
determine by the hardcore and soil beneath it.
• STRENGTH
-capable of withstanding load primarily by resisting
bending.
-depends on material used for the frame structure.

• RESISTANCE TO FIRE
-to provide resistance to fire for a period adequate for
the escape of the occupants from the building.
HAUNCHED COLUMN
• Haunched connections are used when there is
a need to achive high movement transfer. The
haunch locally increases the effective depth of
the section. Beams are attached using
multiple pairs of bolts and endplate. Little
adjustment is possible.
CONCRETE HAUNCH
• This connection is more appropriate to be
used in low rise unbraced structures.

• Need an adequate bearing surface at the soffit

of the beam.
• There are two types of concrete haunch on
column:
Simply supported
Simply supported
• Require confinement angles or bearing pads.

• Can be developed by:

• Using non-shrink grout between the end of beam and
the column.
• Providing transfer of tension
– E.g.: reinforcement bars at the top of the beam
Dapped-end supported
Dapped-end supported
• Can be developed by:
• using non-shrink grout at two different interfaces.

• The procedure is more difficult compare to the

simply supported.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CONNECTION

Connection between members must be saved

and speedy erection
Must be economical
Provide some space for welding ,insertion of
gaskets ,and other operation .
Must be visually acceptable and match the
completed structure in scale
EFFECTS OF THE LOADING WITH THE WRONG
CONNECTION

 The pre-cast concrete structure will be deflection

 The structure of the building will be not strength

 There will be have many problems of the building structure

-So, the test should be done before making the pre-cast
concrete structure
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
CONCLUSION
Adding steel angle cleat improved the strength of
the entire connection .
Adding steel angle cleat did not significantly reduce
the ductility of connection
 use two bolts in precast column connecting the
stiffened angle cleat provided satisfactory
performance
Use steel angle cleat in precast concrete connection
delayed the accurence of first crack at connection
