SOCIAL MEDIA
How did it became a medium of
globalization?
Social media does not change
your culture, it reveals it.
—Sandy Carter
In what way is ‘social media’ used to spread ideas and cultures all
over the world?

The number of social media users is increasing with

the passage of time. Most if not all have easy access to social
media sites hence, they can acquire ideas and cultural
information without difficulty from anywhere in the world.
Social media provide its users a way to interact with
millions of people from hundreds of different cultural
regions. In that virtual world, they have no limit of
conversation, sharing of information and promotion of
cultures. The wireless planet is certainly far more borderless.
That is why social media can be the best option for spreading
national culture globally without visiting other countries
physically.
Moreover, people from all walks of life are
active users of Facebook, Instagram, Gmail,
Twitter, YouTube, and the like. And every time
they share their daily based happenings and
personal experiences, their cultures can be
clearly reflected. Friends from other countries
become familiar with the traditions, norms
and values and way of living across the
borders. This is how social media is used to
promote national culture and disseminate
information around the world.
What is the impact of ‘social media’ to the
Filipino culture?
The advancement of the Internet has facilitated the rapid
emergence of complex interactions of dispersed groups of people
with shared interests, or at times contradictory goals, across the
globe. And as media networks and technology progresses,
Philippines holds on to its title as the social media capital in the
world.

We, Filipinos, spend a lot of time socializing through various

social networks. But sometimes, we get too engrossed that we forget
its supposed purpose. With the advent of social media, its part in the
Filipino culture grows. Social media formed new bonds and brought
forth creativity and greater sense of awareness among Filipinos.
However, it also made us adapt and support other cultures more than
our own. We get too attached to Western and other Asian cultures
that we lose our sense of nationalism. Also, social media created a
somehow liberated Filipino culture. Some traditions are neglected as
we take part in fads and trends of other countries.
In addition, social media also created a
culture of hate and harsh judgements among
some Filipinos. Bashing or hate comments are
common within social media sites and often,
fellow Filipinos drag each other down.

Nonetheless, we still have a long way to go

to keep up with the uncontrollable dawn of
Social Media. It’s a new era. And sometimes,
the beginning of a new era is the death of
another.
Culture is the key to one’s identity.

In what way is ‘social Though easily cultured by other countries,

we, Filipinos still value our heritage and
media’ used by Filipinos to identity. With our tradition and values, we use
spread their culture? social media to promote our cultural identity
by taking steps to promote cultural awareness
and patriotism.

Filipinos promote culture through social

media by being active supporters of local
sellers, artists, cooks, etc. and sharing their
craft in social networks and accounts. Also,
some Filipinos create social groups with the
aim of preserving and promoting culture and
heritage.
Social media networks are mostly used by
young people and students who play an
important role to spread one national culture
from one country to another. When students
migrate to a country for the purposes of
higher education, they adopt the culture of host
country such as eating habits, clothing, sports,
celebrations of different national events etc.
All of these where they participate or have
sight are shared on social media networks.
Friends of these students from their native
countries watch videos and photos from host
countries. They get information from the
culture of other countries by the help of various
networks.
With the internet and social media being
a huge part of today’s culture, I think
it’s important to promote staying smart
online. – G. Hannelius
