function of the heart.
● Can also be known as the term

○ Generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or
blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack
● Includes: coronary artery disease,
arrhythmias, and congenital heart defects
(heart defects that you are born with).
Facts on Heart Disease
● One in every four deaths in the U.S. is related to heart disease
● Coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction are some
examples of heart disease
● Heart disease might be treated with medication or

surgery
● Quitting smoking and exercising
regularly can help prevent heart disease
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
● Occurs when the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart become
narrowed
● Risk Factors of CAD
○ high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, family history of CAD,
diabetes, being overweight
● 8.8 million deaths; 15.5% deaths worldwide
● Preventions
○ exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet
that’s low in sodium and high in fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking,
drinking only in moderation
Arrhythmia
● Is an irregular heart beat
● Occur when the electrical impulses in the heart that coordinate the heartbeat
do not work properly
● Irregular heartbeats are common, and all people experience them
● Ways in which the heartbeat can lose its rhythm
○ tachycardia, when the heart beats too fast, bradycardia, when the heart beats too slowly,
premature ventricular contractions, or additional, abnormal beats, fibrillation, when the
heartbeat is irregular
Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
● Most often caused by atherosclerosis, build up of fatty plaque within the
artery, leading to a blockage.
○ Blood supply is cut off.
○ Kills muscles
● Symptoms include:
○ Most common - pain/tightness in chest or arm.
○ Fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness.
● Effect:
○ Damages muscle of the heart
● Recovery:
○ May take several weeks for recovery
How many people are affected?
● The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention Stated:
Common Risk

○ Children are at a higher risk

● Women with diabetes have an

increased risk.
Lifetime Effects

○ Depending on severity, type of Heart Disease, mental approach to the disease.

● Strong minded people respond better than those that dwell.

● Without changing habits, the disease will only get worse.
○ Live healthier lifestyles

● Can lead to unhealthy psych
