INTRODUCTION
Filipinos love to listen, sing, and create their
own music. They use music to express
different emotions and beliefs.
The Philippines..

Philippines has a rich folk song tradition

which tells about the lives of the people in a
particular community or region.

In Luzon, farming was the most common

livelihood during the older times.
The Philippines.. (Cont.)
Farmers usually entertained themselves by
singing songs while planting and harvesting.

There were songs about children, love,

courtship, and even death. Some of this
songs have been handed down from
generation to generation and are still being
sung today.
II.

02Liturgical and Devotional Songs
Filipinos celebrate religious rites all
year round through dances and songs.
Each religious rite comes with
different types of music which have
Spanish and Western influences.
02 Liturgical and Devotional Songs (Examples)

A. Mass. This is a catholic liturgical

celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

Examples: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo,

Sanctus, Benedictus, & Agnus Dei
02 Liturgical and Devotional Songs (Examples)

B. Senakulo. This is a catholic tradition in

the Philippines which dramatically reenacts
the life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ.

Usually performed in Chapels, churches, plazas or

community stages or even on the streets every Holy
Week.
02 Liturgical and Devotional Songs (Examples)

C. Pasyon. This is a well known narrative

song about the passion and death of Christ.

It is usually performed during Lent and is sung in

free rhythm with an improvised melody.
Traditionally, the pasyon is chanted by two or more
individuals. It takes about 18-30 hours of straight
singing to finish.
02 Liturgical and Devotional Songs (Examples)

D. Flores De Mayo. These events are

celebrated during the entire month of May.
The flowers that bloom during this month
are gathered and offered to Blessed Virgin
Mary.

The Santacruzan (Sacred Cross) is a ritual pageant

participated by the queens of May.
03 Secular Music

These are non-religious songs which reflect

the impact of Spanish colonization. These
songs are mostly about the love of a man for
a woman.

Examples of secular music are the Harana,

Balitaw, Polka, and Paso Doble.
04 Kundiman

This is the Filipino version of the classic art

song which talks about the deep and pure
love of a person for another.

Kundimans composed during the 1800s

showed love and loyalty to our mother
country. Some of the famous Filipino
Composers of Kundimans are Nicanor
Abelardo and Francisco Santiago.
