Introduction to Sand Production
Production of sand particles during production which is not desirable.
Facilities are installed to control it.
An expensive investment for operator.
It is of great significance for the operator to evaluate if sand control is needed
before production, or after some time of sand free production.
To provide technical support for sand control decision making , it is essential to
predict the production condition at which sand production occur.

Literature Review
Isehunwa and Olanrewaju in 2010, presented a simple analytical model for predicting sand
production volume in a Niger Delta oil field.
The basic assumptions were:
1. Sand particles are spherical and submerged in a moving fluid.
2. Drag and buoyancy forces are predominantly acting on the sand particles.
3. Fluid flow can be described by Darcy’s law.

Bratli, R.K. and Risnes, R. in 1981 gave a simple analytical approach of the stability of sand arches.
The basic assumptions were:
1. Idealized spherical production cavity.
2. Full spherical symmetry of the stress field (two tangential stresses are equal).
3. Material is so weak (in a Plastic state) near the cavity.
4
Problem Statement
Accumulation downhole.
Accumulation in surface equipment.
Erosion of downhole and surface equipment.
Collapse of the formation.

A mathematical models can give quick estimate of sand production rate with
reasonable accuracy. Therefore, there is need to develop a mathematical model.

5
Project Objectives
To develop a Mathematical model which can be used to predict the onset of sand
production for oil and gas wells.
To study the influence of rock strength criterion on sanding onset prediction.
To use this model to elaborate some field sanding problems.
