ELECTRICAL MATERIALS FOR CONSTRUCTION

PREPARED BY: RICARDO

FORBES L. ABEAR
PREPARE ELECTRICAL
MATERIALS FOR INSTALLATION
OBECTIVES:
Upon completion of this learning session the trainee will
be able to:
1. Enumerate the classification of electrical
materials according to use and function.
2. Prepare electrical materials for electrical
installation.
3. Identify and determine uses of electrical
materials.
ELECTRICAL MATERIAL AND DEVICES

ELECTRICAL MATERIAL AND DEVICES
They are provided with “knockouts” or machine punched pieces of metal
which are not completely cut loose from the box. These are removed when ends
of conduits inserted through them for installation. They are commonly used to:

a. Accommodate flush mounted switches c. Accommodate spliced and joined

and convenience outlet in conduit conductors and future connection
and BX cable installation

b. As pull boxes in conduit installation d. As attachment for ceiling receptacle and

wall bracket
ELECTRICAL MATERIAL AND DEVICES
Special junction and outlet boxes must be used in wet and hazardous location. These
boxes are made of cast steel and have threaded bubs so that the rigid conduit can be
screwed tightly into the boxes.
Types of Electrical Boxes

1.Utility handy Box 3. Pull Box or Cut-out box

2. Octagonal Ceiling Outlet 4. Square Junction Box

Or Junction Box
SWITCH -Used to close or open electrical circuit.

TYPES OF SWITCHES ACCORDING TO

INSTALLATION MOUNTING

1. Surface type –switches that are

directly mounted on the walls.

2. Flush type –switches that are flush

mounted on the walls.

3. Hanging type –switches that are not

mounted on wall surfaces but they
are hanging

Several terms are used to describe switch contacts:

Way - number of Momentary -

conducting positions, switch returns to its
three or more. normal position
when released.

Pole - number of
switch contact sets.

Open - off
position,
contacts not
conducting.

Closed - on position, Throw - number of

contacts conducting, conducting positions,
there may be several single or double.
on positions.
KINDS OF SWITCHES ACCORDING TO NUMBER OF POLE AND
THROW

1. Single pole, single throw (S1) 2. Double pole, single throw

3. Single pole, double throw (S3w) 4. Three pole, single throw

5. Double pole, double throw 6. Three pole, double throw

8. GFCI outlet

5. Air condtioning Unit outlet

6. Pop-up Floor outlet
with tandem ground
9. Three-phase outlet

7. Generator outlet
Ceiling/Lighting outlet/Receptacle

1. Ceiling lamp 2. Ceiling lamp

receptacle (surface type) receptacle (flush type)

3. Combination receptacle
with pull chain switch

4. Hanging lamp receptacle 5. hanging lamp

1. Actuator lever - used to manually trip and reset the circuit breaker. Also indicates
the status of the circuit breaker (On or Off/tripped). Most breakers are designed so
they can still trip even if the lever is held or locked in the "on" position. This is
sometimes referred to as "free trip" or "positive trip" operation.
2. Actuator mechanism - forces the contacts together or apart.
3. Contacts - Allow current when touching and break the current when moved apart.
4. Terminals
5. Bimetallic strip
6. Calibration screw - allows the manufacturer to precisely adjust the trip current of
the device after assembly.
7. Solenoid
8. Arc divider / extinguisher
