Impact of Japanese Occupation To the Philippines
• Japan promised to grant the Philippine Independence so long
as it cooperates and recognizes Japan’s establishing of a
“Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.” The Japanese,
thus allowed the establishment of the Philippine Republic on
October 14, 1943.
• The occupation led to economic hardships. Because of
scarcity of food, those who lived in the cities evacuated to
the provinces. Production was limited.
• Japanese sought the support of Filipino elites to legitimize
and win popular support in running the government.
