Topic 5: Determination of deflection due to bending for various
Beam supports

A beam bends about its neutral

axis whose inclination relative to
arbitrary centroidal axes.
Suppose that at some section of
an unsymmetrical beam the
deflection normal to the neutral
axis is ζ , as shown in figure.
In other words, the centroid C is
The centroid is shifted because displaced from its initial position
of the beam loading CInitial through an amount ζ to its
final position CFinal.

Deflection
Deflection is deformation from original position in y direction

Deflection
To balance forces within beam cross section: P = σx 𝑑𝐴

V = 𝑥𝑦 𝑑𝐴

𝑀𝑧 = − σx𝑦 𝑑𝐴

What affects deflection?
Bending moment
Magnitude and type of loading
Span (length) of beam
Beam type (simply supported, cantilever)

Problem:1
Determine the deflection curve and the deflection of the free end of the cantilever shown in Figure;
the flexural rigidity of the cantilever is EI and its section is doubly symmetrical.

© Kalasalingam academy of research and education AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES – II (AER18R372)

The load W causes the cantilever to deflect such that its neutral plane takes up the curved Shape.

The deflection at any section Z is then v, while that at its free end is v tip. The axis system is chosen so that the
origin coincides with the built-in end where the deflection is clearly zero.

The bending moment, M, at the section Z is,

M = W (L-z)

Where, Ixy is zero, if the cross section of the beam is symmetrical.

In our problem, the cross section of the beam is doubly symmetrical, so I xy is zero. So the above equation is reduced to

v” = -(W/EI) (L-z)
EI v” = -W(L-z)

V tip = -(WL3 / 3EI)

Problem:2
Determine the deflection curve and the deflection of the free end of the cantilever shown in Figure;
the flexural rigidity of the cantilever is EI and its section is doubly symmetrical.

The bending moment, M, at the section Z is,

M = W/2 (L-z)2

Where, Ixy is zero, if the cross section of the beam is symmetrical.

In our problem, the cross section of the beam is doubly symmetrical, so I xy is zero. So the above equation is reduced to

EI v” = -(W/2)(L-z)2 = -(W/2)(L2-2Lz+z2)

V tip = -(WL4 / 8EI)

Topic 5: Determination of
deflection due to bending for
various Beam supports
The rigidity of the flexural
member depends upon the
length of the beam, types of
load and their magnitude. If
the deflection of the beam is
beyond the permissible limit,
there will be a loss of rigidity
causing undesired deflections
and slopes and also the smooth Third lesson summary
operation of a flexural member
becomes impossible.
