Political science is related to several other social sciences. It is closely related to sociology, as sociology studies society and political science studies the state. Political Science and Sociology • The terms political science and sociology are closely related • Sociology is the parental science of all the social sciences. • According to Gilchrist, ‘Sociology is the science of society. Political Science is the science of the state’. • Political Science gives to Sociology facts about the organization and functions of the state, and obtains from it knowledge of the origin of the political authority and laws which controlled society. • A political scientist must be a sociologist and a sociologist ought to be a political scientist. For example The Hindu Marriage Act. • The communal riots and revolutions etc.it has both political and sociological issues. • The analysis of political parties cannot be divorced from their social classes. Political Science and History • The relationship between these two is very close and intimate. • According to John Seeley, “History without Political Science has no fruit. Political Science without History has no root. • Freeman says ‘History is past politics’. • History deals with concrete and matter of things. • History is past politics and politics is present history. • The historical facts are used by political science to formulate laws and principles for political life • History gives information to the origin and development of political institutions and thought. • History is the laboratory of political science. Political Science and Economics • Both Economics and Political Science are concerned with the welfare of society. • Economics was regarded as a branch of politics. It is called political economy • Political power is the root of the economic power. • The Greeks called Economics by the name of Political Economy. • Adam Smith in his book “Wealth of Nations "says, ‘political economy proposes to enrich the people and the sovereign’. • Economics touches Politics at more than one point because production and distribution of wealth are largely influenced by government, and because the solution of many economic problems must come through political channels. • Taxation, tariff laws, government ownership of public utilities like railways and electricity, • Political science and Public Administration : • Political Science is related to the study of state and Government. • Public Administration deals mainly with the activities of the government. • They are two sides of the same coin. • In the process of making laws, the civil servants draft the bills to place before the legislature. Similarly other policies are also framed with the help of administration. • Public Administration begins where politics ends • The political chief enjoys the power of direction and supervision of the work of administration • Political Science and Ethics : • Ethics is concerned mainly with questions regarding the principles of good life for individuals. • Political Science is concerned with the realization of common good of the society as a whole. • The greatest good of the greatest number is an important aspect of politics. • The aim of the politics and ethics is the same • There is a close relationship between law and morality. • The most popular moral principles have been changed into a set of laws • “What is morally wrong cannot be politically right”. • Political Science and Jurisprudence : • Political Science is the study of the State and Government. • Jurisprudence is the science of Law. • The regulations of the state are called laws and these are formulated, administered and enforced by the government. • Every state, no matter what its form of government ,develops its own constitutional law. • From social point of view, laws must be influenced by their environments.
