Learning Outcomes
● Today we will learn about Ancient Greek culture, sculpture, and
architecture.
● We will take the information we learn about Ancient Greek
gods/goddesses and create sculptures to represent a god/goddess and
create an environment to place them in.

Architecture
● Main features: tall columns, intricate detail, symmetry, harmony, and
balance
● Most temples and government buildings were built in the Doric, Ionic, or
Corinthian style
○ These architectural designs are still used today in construction
● Greek temples and sculptures were painted with bright colors
● Parthenon- most famous temple of Ancient Greece, built for the goddess
Athena
● Logic and order were important to Greek architecture
Zeus
● Greek God of the sky, thunder, lightning, and justice
● Symbols:
○ Thunderbolt, eagle, bull, oak tree
● King of the Gods, lives on Mount Olympus
● Portrayed with scepter in one hand and thunderbolt in the other
● Hera- Wife/Sister
○ Children: Ares, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Dionysus, Hermes, Heracles, Helen of Troy,
Hephaestus
● One of the oldest Greek Gods and most powerful
○ Powers: Ability to throw lightning bolts, control weather, shapeshift, mimic voices

● God of the Sea (most known for)
○ Protected the Waters
○ Sailors relied on him
○ Worshipped for navigation
● Also God of earthquakes and horses
○ Strike his trident to the ground and create an earthquake
○ “Earth-shaker”
● “Poseidon” Greek for Husband
● Moody (most violent)
● Big ego
● Father of Orion, Polyphemus, Pelias, etc.

Hades
● God of the Underworld
○ Lord of the Dead, The Wealthy One
● Symbols
○ Cornucopia, , pomegranate, dogs

● Lives in the Underworld
○ His wife, Persephone, visits for 6 months of the year
● Children
○ Zagreus, Macaria, and in some cases Melinoe, Plutus, and The Erinyes
● Feared by the Greeks
