Power Of Google
Apps For Education

by: MIKE T. FERNANDEZ

Teacher III-Damortis National High School
OBJECTIVE

Be able to implement Google Apps in
meaningful ways in your classrooms to
increase efficiency, collaboration and
engagement.
Getting Started with Cloud Computing

Cloud Apps are simply

applications provided as a
service over the internet
without the need to install
software.

Because cloud applications

are accessed over the
internet, it eliminates the
software and operating
system requirements
specified by software
applications.
Getting Started with Cloud Computing

Google Apps are suite of cloud applications. The

simplest common appeal is that regardless of
whether teachers are in house or school remotely
on PC, Google Apps just work with your existing
infrastructure.
Google Apps for Education is a free set of
communication and collaboration tools that
includes email, calendar, and documents.
More than 30 million students, teachers,
and administrators in schools around the
world use Google Apps for Education.
Many students will use these tools in
college and in the workforce — 7 of the 8
Ivy League universities and 5 million
businesses use Google Apps.
Google Apps for Education are built for
schools. They are:
Collaborative: Fast, easy collaboration is
what makes Google Apps unique. The
tools offer real-time editing, powerful
sharing controls, and seamless
compatibility – a great platform for
teamwork in the 21st century.
Customizable: Google make it easy for us
to set dozens of critical security settings and
feature options. Set account permissions to
meet your school’s needs.

Free: They offer Google Apps for Education

to schools for free.
Secure: Google Apps for Education users own
their data. The data schools and students put
in is theirs, and they believe it should stay that
way. They have more than 400 full-time
engineers working to protect our information.

Usable on any device: Whether your school

has laptops, Android tablets, iPads, Macbooks,
desktop PCs or any other device, Google Apps
will work for you. With Google Apps you can
work anytime, anywhere on any device.

Gmail is a free, search-
based e-mail (Web mail)
service, which is
accessible from a Web
browser anywhere in the
world. The backbone of
Gmail is a powerful
Google search engine that
quickly finds any message
an account owner has ever
sent or received.

When Gmail displays an e-mail, it automatically shows all the replies

to that e-mail as well, so users can view a message in the context of a
conversation. There are no pop-ups or untargeted banner ads in
Gmail, which places relevant text ads and links to related Web
pages adjacent to e-mail messages.
Let’s get started!
-To log in to your Google Account type in:
www.google.com in your address bar and press
enter.
-Click “sign in”
Once clicked, you should see this...

Work Better Together

Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service provided

by Google, released on April 24, 2012, which enables user cloud
storage, file sharing and collaborative editing. Google Drive is now the
home of Google Docs, a suite of productivity applications, that offer
collaborative editing on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and
more.
Access your files anywhere
Google Drive on your Mac, PC or mobile
device (or your browser) gives you a single
place for up-to-date versions of your files
from anywhere. In addition to any file type
you choose to upload, Google Docs are
also stored in Google Drive.

that anyone at your school can find and access them.
Create a folder for your grade level to share resources.
#4: Improve the Writing Process

Use Google Docs to:

• Have students work collaboratively from anywhere
• Give students ongoing and simultaneous
feedback
• Use revision history to hold students accountable
for their work
• Publish student work
#5: Reading Response Journals

Instead of lugging home

30 reading response
journals every week to
comment on, have
students keep their
journals in a shared
Google Doc.  You can
give your comments while
students continue to write
in their journals!
#6. Translate Letters Home for Parents

Translate letters
home to parents
by using the
translate feature
in Google Docs.
#7 - Collaborative Homework
The collective working abilities
of google docs are incredibly
useful for collaborative
homework.

For example several students

can work on their
presentation to be delivered
during the hand-in lesson.
#8 - Shared Professional Writing
Are you working with a student
teacher or coteacher?

Are you crafting new curriculum?

Writing your school improvement
plan?

Collaboratively write lesson plans
and other documents in Google
Docs in order to share ideas and
writing in real time as well as provide
timely feedback and clarification to
colleagues.
Using Google Slides to Create an Interactive Quiz
Learning to use a presentation tool is important,
especially with Common Core and Project-Based
Learning highlighting on communication and sharing
learning.

Let’s look at how you can build interactive quizzes using

Slides.
How to Begin

For this exercise, the questions should be

multiple choice. Multiple choice questions
and higher order thinking are an interesting
combination.
Create the Quiz in Slides

Using Google Drive, create a new Presentation.

For a five question quiz, for example, add seven slides for a total of eight
slides.

The first slide, of course, is the Title Slide.

Slide Number 7 will be the “You are Right!” slide.

Slide Number 8 will be the “You are Wrong” slide.

On slides 2-6, you will put separate questions.

Time to Hyperlink
There are, of course, several ways to do this.
Here’s one way:

Use the shapes to draw a circle over

the bullet in front of the answers.
copy and paste the shape to cover
as many answers as you have- Click on the shape over the correct
copying and pasting helps to keep answer so the handles are
the size and shape consistent. active.
In the Hyperlink window, click on
“Slides in this Presentation”, then
scroll to “Slide 7 You are Right!”
Click the Insert link button.
and click Apply.
Click on the shape over the incorrect
answer so the handles are active and
click on the Insert link button again,
this time choosing “Slide 8 You are
Wrong”.

Repeat for as many answers as you

have.

On the Right and Wrong slides you’ll

want to have a button to help you get
back to the question. Same basic
idea- make a shape, click the Insert
link button, and choose the slide you
want it to go to. Something like this:

Google Forms
What is a Google form?

A Google form is a form with questions which

is created and filled in online
The questions can then be shared by email, by
a hyperlink or can be embedded in an existing
website.
Responses to the questions are collated
automatically on a spreadsheet and can be
viewed in a number of formats
