Principles

• Effective communications are essential

to organizational success
• Communications technology allows more
communication channels
• The Internet provides a wide range of
services for communication
• Internet and the World Wide Web are
becoming more universally used and
accepted – management, service and
speed, privacy and security issues must be
continually addressed and resolved

Telecommunications

• Telecommunications is “The electronic transmission of signals

for communications” can be on telephone, PC, radio, TV etc
• Reduces the barriers of time and distance
• How does it work?

• Telecoms devices relay

(send and switch)
signals between
systems and
transmission media
(phone lines, cables,
optical fibers, wireless

Networks

• A Computer network consists of communications media

(wired and wireless), devices (modems, switches, PCs etc),
and software (Network Operating System, Network
Management Software) needed to connect systems or
devices
• The computers & devices on networks are called network
nodes
• Nodes can share data, information, and processing jobs
• Organizations can use networks to share resources such as
hardware, programs, and databases
• Networks enable geographically separated workgroups to
share information
• Networks offer a search capability
• Networks facilitate Communication

Network Types

• Personal Area Network (PAN)

• Local Area Network (LAN)
• Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Missing link

• Wide Area Network (WAN)

• International networks
• Mesh networking (all connected)
• Virtual Private Network (VPN)
• Storage Area Network (SAN)

Distributed Processing
Client/Server Systems
• Centralized Processing – all processing occurs at one location
• Distributed (decentralized) processing – processing occurs
at various locations
• Client/server architecture computers called servers are
dedicated to special functions
• An application server holds the programs and data files for a
particular application (eg SAP)
• An e-mail server sends and receives e-mails
• A web server sends out web pages
• Each server is accessible by all computers on the network
• Servers can be computers of all sizes
• A client is any computer that sends messages requesting
services from the servers on the network

The WWW

• WWW is an application of the Internet – collection of tens of

thousands of computers
• WWW is an information space where documents and web
resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators
(URLs), URL protocols include hypertext links (Http & Https),
and are accessible via the Internet
• Browser is an application used to access and view websites
(Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera)
• WWW uses Client/server model
• The documents it connects are most of the time are websites
• Search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) help
search the web

or whenever
“Cloud computing is a model for enabling required
