m °ich de vos was born on march 4, 1926 at grand
rapids, Michigan (USA).

m Much of his childhood was spent during the Great

Depression.

m He attended Grand °apids Christian High School

and then Calvin College.

m He met his close friend and lifelong business
partner, Jay Van Andel, in high school.

m DeVos served in the United States Air Force from

1944 to 1946.

m After his World War uu tour of duty, he was

inspired, along with Van Andel, to open a flight
school in Grand °apids called Wolverine Air
Service.

m un 1949, DeVos and Van Andel became Nutrilite
distributors, selling vitamins and other dietary
supplements.

m The two men launched Amway in 1959. The name

is an abbreviation of ³American Way.´

m At that time, they sold one product, a multi-

purpose cleaner. Amway earned half a million
dollars in 1960.
