Types of Digital Computer
 Mainframe Computer
• It was introduced in1975.
• Powerful computers, It generally
consists of multiple processors.
• Its memory is in GB.
• It serves 100 to 1000 of users at a time.
• Its Size is bigger than micro and mini
computers.
• Its price is $500000 to $5 million.
• It is used by the large organizations like
banks.
• Multiple user interfaces
• Reliability, availability, serviceability.
• Applied where processes are to be done
with no downtime.
• Examples are IBM-370 and NEC

• It was introduced in1960.
• It generally consists of two or more processors.
• Its memory is in GB.
• It serves two to thousands of connected users at a time.
• Its Size is bigger than micro.
• Its price is $18000 to $500000.
• It is used by business institutes and departments..
• Mid range computers. PDP-8, a minicomputer
from the 1960s
• Small computers with most of the features of large
computers.

• Smaller than mainframe and larger than microcomputers.

• Mostly used as server computers.
• Examples are VAX-8800 and MV-1500

• It was introduced in1970.
• It generally consists of one processors.
• Its memory is in GB.
• It can normally be used by one user at a time.
• Its Size is very small.
• Its price is $500 to $5000.
• It is used at homes, offices and Educational
institutes..
• Mid range computers.
• A standard personal computer
• Consists of CPU, RAM, Modem, sound card and video
card etc

 Embedded Computer
• A small computer device built into another
device, e.g. the computer embedded in an ATM
machine.
 Personal Computer
• Also called PC or desktop computer.
• Screen separated from the case containing mother
board and power supply.
• Mouse, keyboard and other external peripherals.
• Several categories including:
 Tower model
 Desktop model
 Laptop and Notebook
 Tablet
 Hybrid computer
 Personal digital assistant (PDA) and more.

 Devices used for augmented memory

• Run server software to respond to clients.
• Powerful, capable of responding to several clients.
• A server is a software or hardware device that accepts
and responds to requests made over a network.
• The device that makes the request, and receives a
response from the server, is called a client.
 Workstation
• A workstation is a computer intended
for individual use that is faster and
more capable than a personal
computer.
• Comparatively powerful computer for
individual use.
• More capable and faster than PC.
• Used for processor and memory
extensive tasks.

 Super Computer
• A very powerful computer or a collection of several computers acting as a single
computer.

• Very powerful.
• Used to solve problems where the primary constraint is processing speed.
• Used in nuclear research, weather forecasting, Bitcoin mining and more.
