Green

Energy
Overview
What is Green Energy?

Different Types of Green Energy?

What is Green
Energy?
-Green energy comes from
natural sources such as
sunlight, wind, rain, tides,
plants, algae and geothermal
heat, all of which
are renewable, meaning
they're naturally replenished.
-Clean, Safe and not harmful
to the environment (aka
mother earth)
Types of Green Energy
Solar Power
Solar power is the use of
the sun’s energy either
directly as thermal energy
(heat) or through the use
of photovoltaic cells in
solar panels and
transparent photovoltaic
glass to generate
electricity
THE ADVANTAGE AND
DISADVANTAGE OF SOLAR
POWER?
Problems?
-The sun has to shine
brightly. The light from the
sun
produces a very small
amount of energy.

-The cost of solar panels

and the systems range
between $20k-40k (260-
520 million rupiahs)
Wind Power
-These giant pinwheels spin from strong winds which
spins a turbine of a generator to produce energy.

-Wind power, as an alternative to burning fossil fuels, is

plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produce no
greenhouse gas emissions during operation, consumes no
water, and uses less area.
Enviromental effects:
-There are reports of bird and bat mortality
due to the wind turbines operating
-Wind turbines generate some noise, at
about 45dB(slightly louder than refrigerator)
which can be heard in 300m distance.

BUT REMEMBER!
-Relatively minor than fossil fuel.
-Wind turbines has some of the lowest global warming
potential per unit of electrical energy generated.
Hydropower
Hydropower is power derived from the energy of falling water or heavy flow
water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes.

Since ancient time, hydropower from many kinds of watermill has been used as
a renewable energy for irrigation and the operation of various mechanical
devices.

In the late 20th century, the terms has been used almost exclusively in
conjunction with the modern development of hydroelectric power.
International institution such as the World Bank view hydropower as a means
for economic development without adding substantial amounts of carbon to
the atmosphere.
HYDROPOWER AND
ENVIRONMENT
Hydropower doesn’t pollute the water on the air. However,
hydropower facilities can have large environmental impacts by changing the
environment and affecting land use, homes, and natural habitats in the dam
area.
Most hydroelectric power plants have a dam and a reservoir. These
structure may obstruct fish migration and affect their populations. Operating
a hydroelectric power plant may also change the water temperature and the
river’s flow. These changes may harm native plants and animals in the river
and on land, and may cover people’s homes.
Methane, a strong greenhouse gas, may also form in some
reservoirs and be emitted to the atmosphere
Biofuels
A biofuel is a fuel that is produced through contemporary biological processes such as
agriculture and anaerobic digestion , rather than a fuel produced by geological processes such
as those involved in the formation of fossil fuels, such as coal and petroleum, from prehistoric
biological matter. Biofuels can be derived directly from plants, or indirectly from agricultural,
commercial, domestic, and/or industrial wasted.
The different is a made between primary and secondary biofuels. In the case of
primary biofuels, such as fuelwood, wood chips and pellets, organic materials are used in an
unprocessed form, primarily for heating, cooking or electricity production. Secondary biofuels
result from processing of biomass and include liquid biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel that
can be used in vehicle.
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE
OF BIOFUELS
One of the major reasons for producing biofuels is to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions and to reduce the effects of global warming produced by fossil fuels. In the
lower levels of pollution, since biofuels can be made from renewable resources, they
cause less pollution to the planet. The common conception is that growing crops for
biofuels will replace the greenhouse gas emissions because they directly remove carbon
dioxide from the air.
Even with all the benefits associated with biofuels, they are quite expensive to
produce un the current market. And also large quantities of water are required to irrigate
the biofuel crops and it may impose strain on local and regional water resources, if not
managed wisely.
Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth. Its

sustainable resources. Resources of geothermal energy
range from the shallow (low) ground, to hot water or hot
rock found a few miles beneath the Earth’s surface, and
down even deeper to the extremely high temperature of
molten rock called magma.
The Problem?
• Geothermal Energy systems are expensive to put in. the cost of
drilling well to the geothermal reservoir is very expensive. Add
the cost of heating, and cooling system installation and the cost
goes even higher.
• Construction of geothermal power plants has the potential to
cause the surface instability and trigger earthquake.
BUT….
• Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly that
does not cause contamination (air pollution, noise
pollution, and does not produce carbon emissions and
does not produce gas, liquids, or other toxic materials).
