Ramsar site criteria

• Criterion 1: "it contains a representative, rare, or unique example of a natural


or near-natural wetland type found within the appropriate biogeographic
region."
• Criterion 2: "it supports vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered
species or threatened ecological communities."
• Criterion 3: "it supports populations of plant and/or animal species important
for maintaining the biological diversity of a particular biogeographic region."
• Criterion 4: "it supports plant and/or animal species at a critical stage in their
life cycles, or provides refuge during adverse conditions."
• Criterion 5: "it regularly supports 20,000 or more waterbirds."

HISTORY ON THE CONVENTION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

EARTH SUMMIT-1992
• the Rio Summit or the Earth Summit , was a major United Nations conference
 held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14 June in 1992.
• Earth Summit was created as a response for Member States to cooperate
together internationally on development issues after the Cold War.
• Due to issues relating to sustainability being too big for individual member
states to handle, Earth Summit was held.
• The Convention on Biological Diversity, was opened for signature at the Earth
Summit to conserve and sustainably use biological diversity and to share its
benefits
WORLD SUMMIT-2002

• The World Summit on Sustainable Development took place in South Africa,


from 26 August to 4 September 2002. It was convened to discuss [sustainable
development] organizations, 10 years after the first Earth Summit in Rio de
Janeiro.
• It was therefore also informally nicknamed "Rio+10".
• The Johannesburg Declaration was the main outcome of the Summit
• Agreement was made to restore the world's depleted fisheries for 2015.
