Recap!

What is
ALGEBRA?
Algebra

Is the study of mathematical

symbols and the rules for
manipulating these symbols; it is
unifying thread of almost all of
mathematics.
What have you
learned in
Algebra?
Let’s test your memories.
Perform the different operations.
A = 2x2y2 + 2x C = 2y2x2 – 15x
B = 3abc + 3xyz D = 10abc – 10xzy

1. A+C 5. C . D
2. B+D
3. D–B
4. A.B
Answers
1. ( 2x2y2 + 2x ) + (2y2x2 – 15x) 4. (2x2y2 + 2x)(2y2x2 – 15x)
= 4x2y2 – 13x = 2x4y4 - 26x3y2 - 30x2
2. (3abc + 3xyz) + (10abc – 10xzy) 5. (2y2x2 – 15x)(10abc – 10xzy)
= 13abc – 7xyz = 20abcx2y2 – 20x3y3z – 150abcx + 150x2yz
3. (10abc – 10xzy) – (3abc + 3xyz)
= (10abc – 10xzy) + (-3abc - 3xyz)
= 7abc – 13xyz
FACTORING

Is the process of finding the factors.

Finding what to multiply together to

get an expression
for example:

2x3=6
FACTORS
another example:

(x + 3)(x + 1) = x2 + 4x + 3

FACTORS
Therefore,

Factoring is like “splitting” an

expression into a multiplication
of simpler expressions.
6 Types of Factoring

1.Greatest Common Factor

2.Groupings
3.Difference in Two Squares
4.Sum or Difference in Two Cubes
5.Trinomials
6.General Trinomials
Greatest Common Factor
• The largest quantity that is a factor of all the integers or
polynomials involved.
Steps in Finding the GCF of a list of Integers or Terms.
1. Prime factor of the numbers.
2. Identify common prime factors.
3. Take the product of all common prime factors.
If there are no common prime factors, GCF is 1.
Try answering this.
Find the GCF of each list of numbers

1) 12 and 8

2) 7 and 20

3) 6, 8 and 46

4) 144, 256, 300

Answer:
Try this!

1) x3 and x7

2) 6x5 and 4x3

3) a3b2 , a2b5 and a4b7

Answer
Example for Common Factoring
Factor: 2y + 6
Both 2y and 6 have a common factor of 2:
2y is 2 . y
6 is 2 . 3
So we can factor the whole expression into:
2y + 6 = 2(y+3)
So 2y + 6 has been “factored into” 2 and y + 3
Checking
Factoring is also the opposite of EXPANDING:

2(y + 3) = 2y + 6
Example for Common Factoring
Factor: 3y2 + 12y
Firstly 3 and 12 have a common factor of 3.
So we could have:
3y2 + 12y = (y2 + 4y)
But we can do better!
3y2 and 12y also share the variable y.’
Together that makes 3y.
3y2 is 3y . y
12y is 3y . 4

So we can factor the whole expression into:

3y + 12y = 3y (y + 4)

QUESTIONS???
Test yourself!

1. 5x2 + x3 + 10x4

2. 4abc + 16ab

3. 3x + 15y

4. 5x2 + 2x3

5. x2 + y2
GROUPINGS

Often times when there is no factor

common to all terms of a polynomial
there will be factors common to some of
the terms.
Steps for Groupings
Factor out: 3ax + 6ay + 4x + 8y
Step 1:
Create a group out from the polynomials that has similarities/common.
(3ax + 6ay)+(4x + 8y)
Step 2: Factor out each group using GCF factoring.
3a(x + 2y) + 4(x + 2y)
Step 3: What is common to both?
(3a + 4)(x + 2y)
QUESTIONS???
Answer this!

1. 2ac + 6ax – 5c – 10x

2. 3x2 + 6x + 4x + 8

3. 5x2 + 3x + 20x + 12
