how the artist uses the elements of art 

to create an effect and to help convey the artist's intent. 


BALANCE

A feeling of

equality

in weight, attention, or attraction


of the various visual elements within the pictorial field
as a means of accomplishing organic unity.
Balance can be achieved in

A form of balance achieved


using identical balance
compositional units on either
side of a vertical axis within the
picture plane.

using similarly balanced
compositional units on either

A form of balance than is even,

the shape’s constraining plane.

Variety is brought about by using

different colors, sizes and shapes in a work of art.

It is the partner of unity.

important to keep a viewer’s eyes engaged in the work.
Without movement, artwork becomes stagnant.

Rhythm is created by the variety and repetition
of elements in a work of art that come together to
create a visual tempo or beat.
