ANALYZE AND EXPLORE

• Repairing and enhancing photos is an important skills for

people such as graphic designers, restoration experts, and
professional photographers. It is useful skill for the amateur
photographer as well. Many families have old photographs
that have been damaged over time, and most people have
taken a red-eye photo, a photo that is too light and dark, or
one in which the subject is tilted. Photoshop to restore,
correct, and improve their photographs.
ANALYZE AND EXPLORE

• It is impossible to make every photo to look perfect-

even with graphic-editing software. Therefore,
enhancing and repairing photos is both an art and
science. Using the digital tools available in Photoshop,
you can employ technology to make reparative and
restorative changes.
SPOT HEALING BRUSH TOOL

• Spot Healing Brush Tool is used to clone areas and quickly

remove the blemishes from the image. The main difference
between Spot Healing Brush and the normal healing brush is
that the spot healing brush requires no source point. Whereas,
the Healing Brush needs a source point.
• First open the image which you want to edit from File >
Open.
• Select Spot Healing Tool from the left toolbar.
YOU MAY ALSO
SELECT THE
TOOL BY
PRESSING J.
IN THE OPTIONS BAR, WE WOULD BE ABLE TO
SEE THE BRUSH, BLENDING MODE, TYPE, ETC…
AS SHOWN BELOW.
CLICK ON THE BRUSH
PRESET PICKER. SELECT
THE APPROPRIATE BRUSH
AND SET THE SIZE,
HARDNESS AND SPACING
ROUNDNESS.
THEN, SELECT THE NORMAL MODE. THERE ARE 3
TYPES IN IT.

Types For Spot Healing Brush

• Proximity match
-The Proximity Match type analyzes the picture pixel around the area where you
are working. It then identifies the best area to sample the pixel information from
the image area. Proximity match repairs and blends using actual pixels.
• Create Texture
-Create texture type is slightly different from the above type. It generates a texture
pattern from the sample data. It blends using texture pattern.
• Content – Aware
-The content aware option compares and uses actual content from the image close
to the image flaw. Use the Content-Aware option while removing large items like
litter, scratch and other annoying elements on your image.
APPLY SOT HEALING
BRUSH
• Here, I have opened
one jpg image. Edit it
with spot healing
brush tool.

In the image, there are white

stars which I want to
remove. For this purpose I’ll
use the Spot Healing Brush
tool.
SELECT THE HEALING BRUSH TOOL. SELECT
CONTENT AWARE OPTION FROM THE OPTION BAR.

Then, set the Brush size according to the size of the star by
using the [and] key from keyboard. Then, click and drag the
brush on the star and release it. You will see that the star will
be removed.
THE SPOT HEALING BRUSH TOOL

• The Spot Healing Brush Tool removes blemishes and

imperfections by sampling pixels around the spot.
Photoshop the paints in the image with matching
texture, lighting, transparency and shading.
• The key to success with the Spot
Healing Brush is to make your cursor a
little bit bigger than the area you
want to fix. You can change the
cursor’s size using the Brush preset
picker at the left of the Options bar,
the Brush Presets panel or the bracket
keys on your keyboard: Press [ to
make the cursor smaller, or ] to make
it bigger. Alternatively, you can also
resize it by Control-Option-dragging
(Alt+right-click+dragging on a PC) to
the left or right.
TO REPAIR DAMAGE WITH THE SPOT HEALING
BRUSH TOOL

• Zoom in on the object’s face and head

• Right click the current healing tool on the Tool panel
• Click Spot Healing Brush Tool in the list to select it.
• If necessary on the options bar, click the Mode box arrow, and then click
Normal
• Click the Proximity Match option button, if necessary, to select it.
• Click the spot and then move the mouse pointer away to view the result.
• Click the Create Texture option button on the options bar to select it.
HEALING BRUSH TOOL

• Healing Brush Tool is similar to

content-aware version of the clone
stamp tool. It enables you to clone
areas from an image and blend the
pixels from the sample area
seamlessly with the target area.
• Select Healing Brush from the
toolbar.
2.1. AFTER SELECTING THE HEALING BRUSH
YOU WILL SEE THE FOLLOWING OPTION BAR.

Select the Brush and mode as you did previously in Spot Healing Tool.
There are 2 options: Sampled and Pattern.

Select the Sampled option.

2.2. APPLYING HEALING BRUSH

• 1.Open the image

In the image there are only 2

stars and I want more stars in
the sky.
So for this purpose I’ll use the
Healing Brush.
• Here we’ve already selected the healing brush. So put your brush
on star and using [ and ] key make your brush size as that of the
star.
After that press Alt key and press the left mouse button. So, The brush will be
changed as below.

The Star is copied to the brush.

So wherever you want the star, click
and hover the mouse and star will be
created automatically. Same thing is
done to create small stars.
After finishing you’ll be able to see an
image as shown below.
THE HEALING BRUSH TOOL

• The healing Brush Tool is better suited for larger areas such as
tears or wrinkles. While the Spot Healing Brush Tool samples the
surrounding pixels automatically, the Healing Brush Tool requires
you to choose the sampled (source) area, as you did with the Clone
Tool. When using the Healing Brush Tool, the Brush Preset picker
allow you to set specific characteristics of the brush, including the
use of a tablet pen. The Mode box allows you to choose one of
several blending modes, or choose to replace the pixels to preserve
the grain and texture at the edges of the brush stroke.
• Top: Set the Options bar’s Sample drop-down
menu to Current & Below so the healing
happens on the new layer you’ve created (just
be sure to position it above the Image layer). If
you want the tool to sample from all the layers
in the document, choose All Layers from the
drop-down menu instead. Like the Spot
Healing Brush, this tool also has a tablet-
pressure option. Bottom left: When you press
the Option key (Alt on a PC), your cursor turns
into a target; simply click to set a sample point
(top). As you start painting over the bad skin,
you see a little crosshairs cursor marking your
sample point (bottom) that moves along with
your brush. Bottom right: By healing on
another layer, you can lessen the effect of the
healing by lowering that layer’s opacity. Here
it’s set to 40 percent.
THE PATCH TOOL

• The Patch Tool is primarily used to repair areas

of an image, mostly used to remove the
distractions or unwanted areas from the image
and it will replace the selected area with the
chosen area.
GETTING STARTED WITH PATCH TOOL

• Select Patch Tool from the

toolbox which is located
under the Spot Healing
Brush Tool panel on the
left hand side of the screen.
• Here, either you can patch with Normal or you can go with Content - Aware. If you select normal, it
will adjust the color and the tone of the selected area but doesn’t move the pixels around the patch.
Some other options are also available for normal patching as shown below:
1. Patch Source from Destination : You can choose this option if you want to replace the selection with
the destination area.
2. Patch Destination from Source : You can choose this option if you want to duplicate the selected area.
3. Transparency for blending : If you select this option, it will preserve the luminosity of the selected
area.
4. Use Pattern : If you want to apply any pattern to the selected portion, you can choose any pattern from
here and just click on "Use Pattern".If you choose content aware, it will blend the selected portion with
the destination in a seamless way. Here you can set values for Structure and Color Adaptation.
OPTIONS FOR CONTENT AWARE PATCHING

• Structure
It will indicate how the patch reflects the existing image. You can give the value between 1 to
5.
• Color
It will apply color blending to the patch. If you give 0, it means the color blending is
disabled. You can give the values between 0 to 10.
Here, I want to remove the tree from the image. For this, first choose Content Aware patch
from dropdown, set 5 in structure and 0 in color.
APPLY PATCHING ON IMAGE

Select the tree with patch tool as you work with lasso
tool.
Now, simply drag the selection right hand side as shown in the image.
If you need to get rid of a new piercing
before the parents see it, the Patch tool
can get that done fast. Top: First, draw an
outline of the offending area freehand
(left). Once you see marching ants, click
inside the selection and drag it to a good
patch of skin and then release your mouse
button (right). Bottom: Problem solved!
The Patch tool can help you keep that
piercing secret for a little while longer. And
by doing the patching on an empty layer,
the original image remains intact.
ZAPPING SHINES AND SHADOWS

• Shiny spots (or hot spots, as some folks call them) are

truly evil. They can ruin a perfectly good photo by
making your subject look like a big ol’ sweat ball. That’s
OK if the person just finished a marathon—glistening
skin is expected then—but not if she’s sitting for a
portrait. Fortunately, the Clone Stamp tool can get rid of
shiny spots and unsightly shadows in a hurry. It works by
copying pixels from one area of an image to another.
• The Photoshop Clone Stamp tool copies one area of
an image onto another area of an image.
Photographers and designers often use the Clone
Stamp tool to remove unwanted elements from a
photograph. For example, it can be used to cover
blemishes on people's faces by copying from another
part of the skin or to remove trees from a mountain
view by copying parts of the sky over them.
STEP 1. DUPLICATE THE BACKGROUND LAYER: OPEN THE
OFFENDING PHOTO AND IMMEDIATELY DUPLICATE THE LAYER
BY PRESSING COMMAND + J (PC: CTRL + J).
STEP 2. GRAFT SOME
NEW SKIN
GRAB THE CLONE
STAMP TOOL FROM THE
MAIN TOOLS PALETTE.
STEP 3: HOP UP TO THE OPTIONS BAR AND CHOOSE A
NICE SOFT BRUSH FROM THE BRUSH PICKER (CIRCLED
BELOW). CHANGE THE BLENDING MODE OF THE TOOL
TO DARKEN AND LOWER THE OPACITY TO 25%.
STEP 4: NEXT, WE NEED TO
TELL ELEMENTS WHERE
THE GOOD SKIN LIVES. DO
THAT BY CLICKING THE
AREA WHILE HOLDING
THE OPTION KEY (PC:
ALT). YOUR CURSOR WILL
TURN INTO A LITTLE
CROSS-HAIR THAT LOOKS
LIKE THIS:
STEP 5: BRUSH THE NEW
SKIN OVER THE SHINY SKIN.
YOU'LL SEE A LITTLE PLUS
SIGN THAT LETS YOU KNOW
WHERE ELEMENTS IS
"SAMPLING" FROM (OR
RATHER, WHERE THE GOOD
SKIN IS COMING FROM). THE
SAMPLE POINT WILL MOVE
AS THE CURSOR MOVES.
STEP 6: MOVE TO ANOTHER
AREA OF THE PHOTO AND
CHOOSE A NEW SAMPLE
POINT BY OPTION (PC: ALT)
CLICKING. IT'S IMPORTANT
TO CHOOSE THE SAMPLE
AREA AS CLOSE TO THE
SHINY AREA AS POSSIBLE
(SO THE COLOR AND
TEXTURE MATCH).
STEP 7: BRUSH THE
BAD SKIN AWAY, AS
SHOWN BELOW.
STEP 8: KEEP
REPEATING THIS
PROCESS ON EACH
SHINY AREA, BEING
CAREFUL TO MAKE
THE SAMPLE POINT
CLOSE TO THE SHINY
PATCH.
STEP 9: CONTINUE
TO BRUSH AWAY
THE SHINE.
FIXING SHADOWS

Step 10: With the

Clone Stamp tool
selected, change
the blending
mode to Lighten.
STEP 11:
OPTION CLICK
(PC: ALT) TO
CHOOSE A NEW
SAMPLE POINT.
STEP 12: BRUSH AWAY
THE SHADOWS IN THE
SAME MANNER THAT
WE BRUSHED AWAY
THE SHINY SPOTS.
TIP: DON'T ERASE ALL
THE SHADOWS, ELSE
YOUR FACE WILL END
UP LOOKING
UNNATURALLY FLAT.
Before

After
Top: This sweet photo would be worth
framing if the subjects weren’t so shiny. To fix
it, grab the Clone Stamp tool and set your
sample point as close to the shiny area as
possible to match tone and texture (right). Be
careful not to let the sample point (the
crosshairs) go into the shiny area, or you’ll
replicate the shine. Bottom: No more shiny
spots! The shadows on the subjects’ faces
and necks have also been lightened. Setting
the Options bar’s Sample menu (not shown)
to All Layers lets you clone on empty layers,
keeping your original image safe and sound.
Toggle the visibility of the layers you just
added off and on for a quick before-and-after
comparison.
HOW TO WHITEN TEETH IN PHOTOSHOP
STEP 1: SELECT THE LASSO TOOL

-START BY DRAWING A SELECTION AROUND

THE TEETH. SELECT THE LASSO TOOL FROM
THE TOOLBAR:
STEP 2: DRAW A SELECTION AROUND THE
TEETH
HOW TO WHITEN TEETH IN PHOTOSHOP
• First, select the Lasso Tool and draw a selection around the teeth.
• In the Layers panel, click the New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon and choose
a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
• In the Properties panel, change the Edit option from Master to Yellows.
• Drag the Saturation slider to the left to reduce the yellow in the teeth.
• Still in the Properties panel, change the Edit option from Yellows back
to Master.
• Select the Brush Tool, set your Foreground color to black, then paint around
the teeth on the layer mask to hide the effects of the adjustment layer in the
lips and gums.
• For images with two or more people, use a separate Hue/Saturation adjustment
layer for each person for best results.
STEP 3: ADD A HUE/SATURATION ADJUSTMENT
LAYER

Click the New Fill or

Adjustment Layer icon at the
bottom of the Layers panel

Choose Hue/Saturation from

the list
• A Hue/Saturation
adjustment layer
appears above the
Background layer
STEP 4: CHANGE THE EDIT OPTION TO
YELLOWS

• The controls and options for the

Hue/Saturation adjustment layer are found in
Photoshop's Properties panel. By default,
Hue/Saturation affects all colors in the image
equally, and that's because the Edit option is
set to Master:

• To edit only the yellows in the image so we

can remove the yellow from the teeth, change
the Edit option to Yellows
STEP 5: LOWER THE SATURATION OF THE YELLOW
-CLICK ON THE SATURATION SLIDER AND BEGIN DRAGGING IT TO THE LEFT. THE
FURTHER YOU DRAG, THE MORE YOU'LL DESATURATE THE YELLOW IN THE TEETH,
MAKING THEM WHITER.
STEP 6: CHANGE THE EDIT MODE BACK TO MASTER

We've whitened the teeth, so

now let's brighten them. Change
the Edit option in the Properties
panel from Yellows back to
Master so we can adjust all
colors at once, not just the
yellows
STEP 7: DRAG THE LIGHTNESS SLIDER TO BRIGHTEN THE
TEETH

• Click the Lightness slider and begin

dragging it towards the right. The
further you drag, the lighter the teeth
will appear. Keep an eye on your image
as you drag the slider so you don't
brighten them too much. For my image,
a Lightness value of around +20 works
well
• The teeth are now looking brighter. But
depending on how accurate you were when
selecting the teeth with the Lasso Tool, you
may notice some areas around the teeth that
have also been brightened. In my case,
there's some unwanted brightening in the
lips and gums along the top and bottom of
the teeth. We'll clean up these areas next:
STEP 8: SELECT THE BRUSH TOOL
A nice feature of adjustment layers in Photoshop is that
they include a built-in layer mask. In the Layers panel,
we see the layer mask thumbnail on the
Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. The thumbnail is filled
mostly with black, with only a small area filled with
white. The black represents the areas in our image that
are not being affected by the adjustment layer. The
white is the area that is being affected.

To clean up the areas around the teeth, all we need to do is paint on the layer
mask with a brush. Select the Brush Tool from the Toolbar
STEP 9: SET YOUR FOREGROUND COLOR TO
BLACK
• We need to paint over the unwanted areas with black.
Photoshop uses our current Foreground color as the
brush color, which means we need to set our Foreground
color to black.
• First, press the letter D on your keyboard. This resets
your Foreground and Background colors to their
defaults, making your Foreground color white and your
Background color black. Then, to swap them and set
your Foreground color to black, press the letter X on The Foreground color (upper left)
your keyboard: The Background color(lower right)
STEP 10: PAINT AROUND THE TEETH TO CLEAN UP THE
AREA

• Paint around the teeth to clean up any problem areas. A small,

soft-edge brush will work best. You can adjust the size of your
brush from the keyboard. Press the left bracket key ( [ )
repeatedly to make the brush smaller or the right bracket key
( ] ) to make it larger. To make the brush softer, press and hold
Shift while pressing the left bracket key, or hold Shift and
press the right bracket key to make the brush edges harder.
EXAMPLE: CLEANING UP AROUND THE
TEETH
• Here, I'm painting along the
upper lip and gum line above the
teeth to remove the whitening
and brightening from those
areas. Since we're painting on
the layer mask, not on the image
itself, we don't see the brush
color as we paint. Instead, the
effects of the Hue/Saturation
adjustment layer disappear
• If you make a mistake and accidentally
paint over the teeth, press the letter X on
your keyboard to swap your Foreground
and Background colors. This sets your
brush color to white. Paint over the
mistake to bring back the whitening, and
then press X again to set your brush color
back to black and continue painting.
• I'll paint away the remaining problem
areas on the left and right sides of the
teeth, and here's the result. The teeth are
now looking whiter and brighter while the
areas around them are back to normal
TO BE CONTINUED...
