and Immersions
What is research?

- A study/investigation
- A scientific investigation
- Research is something that people undertake in
order to find out things in systematic way,
thereby increasing their knowledge.

THE “ITERATIVE” PROCESS OF RESEARCH

THE BASIC TYPES OF RESEARCH

1. DESCRIPTIVE VS. ANALYTICAL

Descriptive research includes surveys and fact-

2. APPLIED VS. FUNDAMENTAL

Applied research aims at finding a solution for an immediate

problem facing a society or an industrial/business
organization, whereas fundamental research is mainly
concerned with generalizations and with the formulation of a
theory.

Research concerning some natural phenomenon or relating

reads, does not take them hook-line
and sinker, does not jump into
conclusions. Treat opinions as
opinions

Begin with a TOPIC in mind

 Relevant
 Significant
 Feasible

Research Topics

11
STEP 1: Topic Identification
Key Questions:
a. What do I know about the topic?
b. What should I know about the topic?
c. What do previous studies say about my chosen topic?
