A carpet is a textile floor covering consisting of an upper

layer of "pile" attached to a backing. The pile is

generally either made from wool or a manmade fibre
such as polypropylene, and usually consists of twisted
tufts which are often heat-treated to maintain their
structure.
mn 1580A.D. Akbar brought certain Persian carpet weavers to mndia
and established them in mndia. The art grew and flourished here
and it was modified as per the royal tastes and mixed with the
mndian arts. The Persian carpets were thus re-created in mndian
forms. These carpets spread to the whole subcontinent with each
area having its own specialties

AKBAR͛S REm (1556 ʹ 1605) :- used cotton warp

and wool pile and a variety of color scheme had
multiple shades of blues, greens, and other colors
on a red and peach base. The patterns were a
reworked copy of Persian style but later modified to
mndian tastes.
JAHA mR͛S REm (1605 ʹ 27) :- Materials like silk and
pashmina were used Subtle gradations and shadings with
yarns were themselves artistic. The patterns of these
carpets were a reflection of manuscript paintingsscrolling
vines, flowering plants, and more naturalistic animals in
pictorial or overall pattern.

SHAHJAHA͛S REm (1628 ʹ 58)

:- Warps and wefts of fine silk
yarns incorporated as many as
2,000 knots per square inch .
Yarn shading was as stylish as in
Jahangir`s reign. During this era,
the patterns were primarily
floral all over with at times
geometric or calligraphic trims.
Some of the popular designs of mndian
carpets that are widely woven are as follows

· Kashan · Serapi
· mspahan · Mir
· Tabriz · Kerman
· Herati · Aubusson
· Bokhara · Mahal
· Heriz · Bidjar

Process is lengthy and requires a lot of

preparation by the craftsman before
weaving the carpet. The yarn used in
making these carpets determines the type
of the carpet to be created.

The carpet craftsmen in Kashmir follow the

traditional Persian or mslamic designs of
Kirman, Kashan, and Esfahan, Herat and so
on to weave their innovative carpets.
The knots per square inch of such carpet can vary between
400-1600 knots per square inch.

The most recurring motif of carpets of Kashmir, found

on silk carpets from Kashmir is the depiction of the tree
of life, in all its glory.

Other popular themes of carpets

of Kashmir include hunting
scenes, bird and animal motifs
and significant themes

Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Agra are the major
carpet hubs in Uttar Pradesh.

The carpets of Uttar Pradesh come with hand imprinted

or hand carved borders in rose-beige, honey, ivory and
mraq green. Another popular design of the carpets made
in Uttar Pradesh is called `sculpture design` that uses
clippings of the thread around the helm and gives it a 3-
dimensional texture. Mostly bright colored pastel
shades are used in this 18th century design pattern.
Agra in Uttar Pradesh was the first
carpet center in the Mughal mndia.
A very interesting system is
followed here that has been oddly
named `Calling Out` system.

Twisted cotton thread is used

along with the Jute twine thus
giving rougher qualities of carpet
with about 60 knots per square
inch
Jaipur, Ajmer, and Bikaner are main centers for this craft
in rajasthan

Some of the motifs used are little

rosettes of mndo-Heratic origin; the
colours found are blue, red, and
purplish-tints in combination. The
other combination is light green and
deep blue. The border motifs include
bold flowers and long serrated
leaves.
The traditional designs of carpets
of Rajasthan follow dushala,
charkona, mehrab and shikar
patterns.

The Durrie is a special type of

carpet manufactured in Rajasthan.
