Beowulf
 What is Communication?
Communication is an important aspect of human behavior and
symbolizes the ability to convey opinions, feelings, information,
body language, signs and ideas through words which may be written
or spoken.
According to John W. Newstrom (n.d), communication is the transfer
of information from one person to another. He believes that it is a
way of reaching other by transmitting idea, facts, thoughts, feelings
and values.

What are communicative functions?
Essentially, the communicative functions are the purpose of the
communication.  What is the individual intentionally or unintentionally
trying to convey?

Examples:
• Answering a question “The answer for question no.2 is communication.”
• Asking a question “What happened to you?”
• Explaining a point “What I am saying is you should know your
limitations.”
• Expressing a response “I really like you.” She said after the unexpected
kiss.
• Giving assurance “Everything will be alright.”
• Giving a suggestion “It would be better if we go this
way.”
• Giving instructions “Encircle the describing word in
the statement.
• Negating “That’s not a good idea.”
What is Communication Breakdown?
A communication breakdown is defined as a failure to exchange
information, resulting in a lack of communication.

What is the role of silence in the
communication process?
Silence is a very effective communication
tool.
Reasons :
• Communicate better. 
• Hear what’s really being said.
What are Jargons?
Jargon is a technical or specialized language. It
is a word which is not always use in our daily
communication context/situation because it is a
word utilize in a specific field of work.
How can we incorporate jargon into our own
language?
We must first understand the meaning of the
words and their context.
Beowulf

•It is an ancient epic poem produce

during the Old English Period. An epic is
a long narrative poem in elevated style
recounting the deeds of a legendary or
historical hero.
 Beowulf (SUMMARY)
• Hrothgar, king of the Danes, built a mead- hall called called
“Heorot”.
• Because of the noise made by the Danes every time they celebrate
their victories , Grendel attacked them. He ruled the hall for 12
years.
• A great warrior from Geatland came to help. His name was
Beowulf.
• Beowulf fought Grendel.
• Beowulf succeed in defeating Grendel. He took Grendel’s severed
arm that served as his trophy.
• Grendel’s mother came to Heorot to avenge the death of her son,
Grendel.
• After defeating Grendel’s mother, he took Grendel’s head.
• Beowulf sailed back to his land and became the king for 50 years.
A thief woken the dragon for stealing a horde of treasures.
• The dragon who was guarding the treasure was angered and
because of this, the dragon destroyed the kingdom of the Geats.
• Beowulf was able to kill the dragon but he was totally wounded.
Because of his condition, he died.
