INTRODUCTION

• Speaking is "the process of building


and sharing meaning through the
use of verbal and non-verbal
symbols, in a variety of contexts"
(Chaney, 1998, p. 13).

1.Be sensitive, sympathetic, and
encouraging. Praise the students
frequently.

and within the ability of students.

students habitually listen to good

according to different context.

patterns, words, etc. over and over
again so that the students can learn
to produce them by imitation.
3.Consciously teaching students correct
pronunciation, intonation, etc. in
such a way as help them learn the

What is meant by
"teaching speaking“

It is to teach the students


to:
• produce the English speech sounds and
sound patterns
• Use word and sentence stress,
intonation patterns and the rhythm of
the second language.
• Select appropriate words and sentences
according to the proper social setting,
audience, situation and subject
matter.
• Organize their thoughts in a meaningful
and logical sequence.
• Use language as a means of expressing
values and judgments.
• Use the language quickly and
confidently with few unnatural
pauses, which is called as fluency.
How To Teach Speaking
ü Students learn to speak in the second
language by "interacting".
ü Communicative language teaching and
collaborative learning serve best for
this aim. 
ü Communicative language teaching is
based on real-life situations that
require communication.
ü By using this method in classes,
students will have the opportunity of
communicating with each other in the
target language. 
ü In brief, teachers should create a
classroom environment where
students have real-life
communication, authentic activities,

• Conversation serves many functions.
People use conversation to
establish relationships through
personal expression, to find out
information, and to compare views
with others.
• Conversation provides a means for
sharing experiences and solving
problems.
ACTIVITY TYPES
1.Filling in gaps in dialogues which are
typical of different social
situations.
2.Structured conversations where
speakers are told what they should
do.
3.Students substitute personal
particulars in existing shell.
STORIES
• Storytelling is an oral sharing of a
personal or traditional story, told
using the essence of the tradition
from which it originates.
• As a shared experience between teller
and listener, it offers natural language
experiences for students.
• Storytelling can be an enjoyable activity
for both tellers and listeners and
should be engaged in at all grade
levels. 
• The teacher should model
storytelling before expecting
ACTIVITY TYPES
1.Retell stories told by teacher, heard
on tape, read in newspaper, etc.
2.Make up a parallel story to the one
heard or read.
3.Tell the stories told in a series of
pictures, a film clip, a group of
photographs, etc.
4.Say aloud the repeating structures in
repeated structure stories.
5.Expend notes to tell a story.
