Element of Prose Fiction/Short
Stories.
1. Plot
A plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the
central conflict. In short stories the plot is usually centered around one
experience or significant moment. There are five essential parts of plot:
- Exposition (Introduction): At the beginning of the story, characters,
setting, and the main conflict are typically introduced.
- Rising Action: The main character is in crisis and events leading up to
facing the conflict begin to unfold. The story becomes complicated.
- Climax: At the peak of the story, a major event occurs in which the main
character faces a major enemy, fear, challenge, or other source of conflict.
The most action, drama, change, and excitement occurs here.
- Falling Action: The story begins to slow down and work towards its end,
tying up loose ends.
- Resolution/Denoument: Also known as the denouement, the resolution is
like a concluding paragraph that resolves any remaining issues and ends
the story.
2. Setting
Setting is the time and place (or when and where) of the story. It’s a literary
element of literature used in novels, short stories, plays, films, etc., and usually
introduced during the exposition (beginning) of the story, along with
the characters.

There are various ways that time and place indicate setting.
Time can cover many areas, such as the character’s time of life, the time of
day, time of year, time period such as the past, present, or future, etc.

Place also covers a lot of areas, such as a certain building, room in a building,
country, city, beach, in a mode of transport such as a car, bus, boat, indoors or
out, etc.
Examples of Setting:
- Time: Cinderella as a young girl, long ago in the past.
- Place: Cinderella’s home in a kingdom far away
There are two types of setting, each having
its own purpose:

a. Backdrop setting b. Integral setting

happen at any point in history or
anywhere. The focus is on the
lesson or message being delivered.
3. Point of View
Point of view is the angle of considering things, which shows us the opinion
or feelings of the individuals involved in a situation. In literature, point of
view is the mode of narration that an author employs to let the readers “hear”
and “see” what takes place in a story, poem, or essay. Point of view is a
reflection of the opinion an individual from real life or fiction has.
Examples of point of view belong to one of these three major kinds:
1. First person point of view involves the use of either of the two pronouns
“I” or “we.”
Example: “I felt like I was getting drowned with shame and disgrace.”
2. Second person point of view employs the pronoun “you.”
Example: “Sometimes you cannot clearly discern between anger and
frustration.”
3. Third person point of view uses pronouns like “he,” “she,” “it,” “they,” or
a name.
Example: “ Stewart is a principled man. He acts by the book and never lets
you deceive him easily.”
Function of Point of View
Point of view is an integral tool of description in the author’s
hands to portray personal emotions or characters’ feelings
about an experience or situation. Writers use a point of view
to express effectively what they want to convey to their
readers.
4. Theme
- Theme is the controlling idea or the central insight. It is
the author’s underlying meaning or main idea that it is
trying to convey.
- Theme is the story’s main ideas. The “message” the writer
intends to communicate by telling the story.
- Theme is the main problem of a story, the theme is
different from the subject itself. The subject of a work can
be described in a concrete way, usually through action.
