 “Hospital is an establishment of temporary space to
be occupied by the sick and injured , where they
undergo appropriate treatment .”
 “Hospital management is a collaborative process
that assesses, plans, implements, coordinates,
monitors and evaluates the options and services
required to meet an individual’s health needs, using
communication and available resources to promote
quality, cost-effective outcomes in the hospital
environment.”
Evolution of hospitals
in India
 Hospitals have known to exist from the time
of Buddha(6th century).
 The most magnificent of them were at the
time of king Ashoka having labor rooms and
children wards as first priority.
 Later in 16th century allopathic medicines
were introduced .
 The first scientifically developed hospital was
built by the British at Madras , 1664.

 19th century , the 1st medical school was
started in Calcutta.
 20th century saw the development of

training institutes and also development


of various new technologies , facilities ,
medicines and treatments.

 Hospitals can be classified based on the

 3. Ownership basis.
 4. Objectives.
 5.Size
 6.Management.
 7. System of medicine.
