A solar based mobile phone works normally as
other mobile phone while it charges up via a solar
panel on the back of the phone in both sunny as
well as cloudy days, apparently generating
enough electric power to make a call anytime.

our fragile environment´.

m These phones will be particularly useful in rural areas

where there is no mains electricity.

m The phone can get fully charged in 8-15

hours depending on the climatic
conditions. An hour of charging can yield

This mobile network has been designed from the ground
up- the hardware, software, towers and network
architecture-to extend existing GSM networks into areas
they could never before serve.

mIts technology
To drive down power, cost and size we had to design our own hardware. The
result ² three boxes at the core:
BlueBox BTS ² The low-power, low-cost BTS (Base Transceiver Station) in a
box. Complete GSM Base Station functionality in a single box, including
microwave backhaul. It comes in two capacities ± 1 TRX and 2 TRX.

GreenBox BSC ² the world¶s first rural-optimized

BSC (Base Station Controller). One GreenBoxΠBSC supports up to 16 BTS
nodes (WorldGSMΠRural, Road or Village sites).

OrangeBox MSC ² the compact MSC (Mobile Switching Center) for rural
deployments. One OrangeBoxΠsupports up to 6 GreenBoxΠBSC nodes,
serving over 10,000 subscribers.
The core network is built on the MontaVista distribution of Linux. This
confers the following advantages:

The Rural Deployment ²
gives low cost coverage of
entire rural areas by
combining free-
standing Rural Site Base
Stations with rooftop-
mounted village sites.
The Road Deployment ² gives fast, low-cost coverage
along major roads and arteries, using the road
site Base Station.
It is based on VNL¶s Cascading Star ArchitectureŒ, a unique approach
to Radio Network Planning, with several important advantages:
mIt allows WorldGSMΠto use panel or omni antennas to provide
coverage.
mIt provides an easy entry into previously uncovered areas.
mIt enables low-cost expansion as uptake increases.
All three contribute significantly to the cost, power savings and
sustainability of the WorldGSMΠsystem.
Solar based network is fully GSM compliant, so it easily links to existing
networks, dramatically extending their reach. But it¶s different from traditional
GSM in these important ways:

Low -power ² at less than 100W per Base Station, the entire system can be run on
Low-
solar power. No power grid or generator necessary.

Low cost ² a fraction of the cost of traditional GSM Base Stations; profitable at
very low densities and ARPUs.

Self-deploying ² an entire Network Base Station packs into two carts and is
Self-
easily installed by unskilled field staff who may not be able to read or write. No
buildings, power, air conditioning. Just point it South and turn it on.

Near-Zero Maintenance ² update software remotely and perform simple swap

repairs if needed.

Cascading Star Architecture ² a unique, modular architecture optimised for low-

cost rural expansion; with local switching to minimise backhaul.
