Innovative Bicycle Parking in

Downtown Ann Arbor

SHARING THE SIDEWALKS AND THE STREETS

What began as a small effort, today helps
distinguish our downtown

•In the 1990’s the

DDA began an
annual
commitment to
install bike
parking
•Use of revenue
from the
municipal parking
system
•Strong statement
of support for
cyclists

Mission: To undertake public improvements that have the greatest impact in

strengthening the downtown area and attracting new private investments.
Traditional Bike Parking

•Foundation of bike parking system

•Standards that we carry through to
non-standard racks:
•Adequate support in 2 places, U-lock
compatible, and theft resistant
Bike Lockers

•First installation nearly

30 years ago by
Cyclesafe

•DDA took over

maintenance &
installed over 2 dozen

•They activate space in

parking structures &
lots & offer secure
option for commuters
Art Hoops:
commemorating and celebrating special events & places

3 Dozen art hoops

installed to
commemorate:
•100th Anniversary of
the Ann Arbor Art Center
•50th Anniversary of the
Ann Arbor Art Fairs
•Grand Opening of the
addition to UM’s
Museum of Art

The hoops are highly

used, but this project
taught us to have more
connection to place
moving forward.

Seasonal, on-street bike racks

High demand for

sidewalk space
required new solutions

•Very active areas need

to accommodate café
tables, retail racks,
pedestrian walk space,
bike parking & more

•When the location is

right, an on-street space
can now accommodate
many more customers.

Bike Parking on Meter Posts

Introduction of multi-space meter system

Wanting to preserve the “unofficial” bike

parking spaces in high-demand areas, the
DDA installed secure bike parking on the old
meter posts
Ensuring Continued Use:
Removing abandoned bikes, tracking use & targeting new installations
