HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING
THIS PROBLEM?
PROJECTS: PREVENTION

• The problem of male dominance ,men in


control of the means of production, and
• Culture of silence regarding sex in marriage
• Were identified through the home visits by
our care givers to the homes of our clients
and patients (chronic patients).

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

• It is important because of the following:


• Disempowerment of women
• Gender inequality, subordination of women gender
based violence;
• Women cannot negotiate safer and more satisfying
sex
• Men make all decisions regarding sexual and
reproductive health;

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT
ADDRESSING THI S PROBLEM?
PROJECTS: PREVENTION

• Through home cell group meetings with


members of the households(focusing on
both perpetrator (s) and victim(s);
• Life skills and impartation of information on
humans rights;
• Counselling and debriefing.
• Referrals to professionals.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE
PROJECT?

• It is a multi-year programme linked to the


daily home visits of clients by care givers.

WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS
INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN
EQUALLY INVOLVED?

• The family ( men, women, children and youth in the


households, including extended family members)
• Both men and women are equally involved.
• Men still find it difficult to openly discuss or respond to
issues raised by their partners during the home cells.
• Men do appreciate their involvement to raise issues
affecting them as men because of their upbringing.

• The Home Based Care programme is funded by


Department of health.
• Our care givers provide a holistic and
comprehensive services to our clients and
community members.
• Public, Private Partnerships

MONITORING AND EVALUATION
PROJECTS: PREVENTION

• Daily visits by our care givers and information so


collected is fed back to the organisation.(data
collection tools)
• On fridays meetings are held to discuss reports and
progress, challenges and plans of action.
• The Project Manager, collate ,analyse and
inteprete data for its validity and
appropriateness and for discussion by
management.

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

• Awareness created and change in behaviour.


• Partners are regarded as equals in decision
making(Feedback)
• Men’s attendance to such household meeting is
encouraging even though still a challenge;
• Partners are starting discussing sexuality issues (positive
sign) change of attitude and behaviour.
• Some men are even talking about establishing men’s forum
to discuss issues of gender violence .

IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC
PROTOCOL TARGETS)
PROJECTS: PREVENTION

• In reference to SADC Protocol, our target is on HIV/AIDS and


Gender Based Violence Prevention .
• We focus on the households family members.
• This approach is changing sexual behaviour patterns and
gender violence( addressing generational gaps between
children/youths and adults).
• Family members had an opportunity to talk about issues that
were previously regarded a taboo to talk about in a family
setting.
• Monthly Debriefing sessions(spiritual) –Tripatite Being.

• The approach is effective in that it is holistic


and focuses on the family as a whole .
• The involvement/participation of men is key
in the success of the prevention programme

• It is holistic and family focused.


• Rapport, buy in and ownership by men is
key.
• The home based care programme can be
used as an entry point.

LESSONS LEARNED
• When marketing the programme, the focus should be on

benefits rather on actual perpetrators (to avoid


stigmatization)
• Family member’s rapport and buy in is a KEY to the
success of the programme
• The introduction of the intervention is done in stages
taking into account the uniqueness of each
family(Contact Making)
• Men’s involved in the process( marketing, introductory
and implementation stages of the intervention).is KEY
