PURPOSE OF THE G-TUBE
To ensure :
1. Normal growth and development
2. Maintenance of health and
wellness
CANDIDATES FOR A PEG -
TUBE
GWhen an Individual is unable to
meet nutritional requirements
REASONS FOR INABILITY TO SWALLOW
SAFELY MAY INCLUDE:

1. Stroke
2. Dementia (e.g. Alzheimer's disease)
3. Medication side effects (dry mouth,
motility problems)
4. Cerebral Palsy
5. Muscular Dystrophy
OVERVIEW OF DARLENE·S FEEDING TUBE
D Gastrostomy (G-Tube)
D A flexible tube or button
D It is placed into the stomach through an opening
in the abdominal wall
D It provides a route for feedings and medication
administration
SYRINGE BOLUS TUBE FEEDING
GGivenvia a syringe
GAdministered at specific times

Check the formula label
Shake container well
Wipe the top of the can
Check the expiration date

‡ Gather equipment
‡ Wash hands
‡ Don clean gloves
‡ Explain procedure

‡ Positionindividual appropriately
‡ Connect extension tubing
‡ Check for residual /placement
‡ Replace residual and clamp tube

1. Flush with warm water


2. Pour feeding into syringe
3. Hold syringe approximately 8
² 10µabove button
4. Infuse slowly
5. Avoid air entering tube

½ Flush extension tubing
until clear & clamp
½ Disconnect the extension set
½ Reinsert plug
½ Keep Darlene upright for 1
hour

 Upon completion of feeding:


Document procedure and individual·s
tolerance
Clean equipment with warm soap and
water
Dry and store equipment

Wash hands
 Prepare medications
 Assemble equipment

 Explain procedure to individual

 Be sure to check that medication can


be crushed

GSit Darlene up
GPut on gloves
GConnect extension tubing
GCheck for residual /placement- again
if Darlene has ´milky liquidµ, > 100
ml, hold medication and replace
liquid
ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION
VIA G- TUBE

1. Flush tube with warm water first (30 ml)


2. Dissolve and crushed pills or medication in
warm water (30 ml)

4. Pour medication into syringe
5. Rinse med cup with water, (30 ml), and
pour into syringe
6. Allow to flow slowly by gravity
7. Flush tube with warm water & clamp

1. Disconnect the extension set
2. Reinsert plug
3. Keep Darlene upright for 1 hour
4. Document procedure & observe
ADMINISTERING MEDICATIONS

To ensure proper flow you should


give:
1. Liquid medicines first
2. Medications that need to be dissolved
second
3. Thick medications last
DO·S AND DON'TS
 
1. Prepare/administer medications separately
2. Deliver medication slowly & steadily
3. Flush G-Tube after:
1. checking placement
2. feeding/meds
  
1. Force medication or fluid into the tube
2. Mix medication with feedings
G ² TUBE SITE CARE
Cleanse site with mild soap and
water
 Keep area clean & dry
 Observe the site for:
½ Redness
½ Swelling
½ Warmth
½ Drainage/leakage
½ Bleeding
½ Unusual color or odor
½ Check site for granulation tissue
MOUTH CARE

Maintain oral hygiene


Brush teeth after each meal
Lubricate lips as needed

Dental care as directed


WHEN TO STOP THE ADMINISTRATION OF
FEEDINGS &/OR MEDICATIONS

Nausea/vomiting
Coughing/choking
Difficulty
breathing
Abdominal or chest
pain
Formula observed in
mouth
OBSERVE/REPORT THE FOLLOWING POTENTIAL
COMPLICATIONS:

 Abdominal distention
 Discomfort/fullness/gas
 Constipation
 Diarrhea
 Fever
 Wheezing
 Gurgling or whistling
 Change in behavior
 Change in behavior
TROUBLESHOOTING POTENTIAL
COMPLICATIONS

A For accidental tube removal


A cover hole (stoma) with gauze
A notify the nurse immediately

A Tube/Button clogged
A check for kinked tube
A flush with warm water or coke
A notify nursing if unable to unclog
