INTRODUCTION TO BPR
`Reengineering is the fundamental rethinking and
radical redesign of business processes to achieve
dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary
measures of performance such as cost, quality,
service and speed.´
The term process in the context of reengineering:-
A process is a series of related activities that:
‡ Takes an input
‡ Add value to it
‡ Produces an output for a customer
INTRODUCTION TO BPR

According to many in the BPR field reengineering should focus on processes and not
be limited to thinking about the organizations. After all the organization is only as
effective as its processes So, what is a process? ³A business process is a series of
steps designed to produce a product or a service. It includes all the activities that
deliver particular results for a given customer (external or internal).´
c Business process reengineering (BPR) is
idea that grew into a fad in the early 1990s. It was started by Michael Hammer's
paper (1990) and book (Hammer & Champy, 1993) on the topic. In the book, BPR
is defined as ³«the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business
processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical contemporary measures of
performance, such as cost, quality, service and speed.´
