In the next five years, the Gates Foundation will continue
to focus on HIV prevention through its Avahan
programme. The Foundation funds many other health
and development projects in India, including maternal
and child health programs.
Gates visited Guleria, a village nearly 140 miles (225
kilometers) east of Patna, the capital of Bihar, one of
only two Indian states where new cases of polio
continue to be reported, according to UNICEF. Uttar
Pradesh is the other.

India has more than one million NGOs of varying sizes,
operating across a vast spectrum of social issues
A majority of our social challenges will always need
grant-based support. Mid-day meal schemes, the care
of challenged children, women·s rights programmes ³
these are examples of the kinds of complex social
challenges that don·t have ´revenue-modelµ solutions
In a country where more than 450 million people
live in poverty, around 50 billionaires account for
20% of India·s GDP.
Charitable giving in India probably totalled about
$7.5 billion in 2009, according to the study by
Bain & Co, equivalent to about 0.6% of the
country·s GDP.

Ö Two forms of ethical egoism:

· People should pursue their self-interest, properly
understood. The role of ethics, then, is to help
people understand their best interests.
· We can still arrange social institutions in a way that
would channel individual egoism to the social good,
i.e. social contracts.
Ö Government and social institutions exist for the
well-being of all people, not to further the interest
of the monarch ² or the wealthy elite.
Ö The economy exists to provide the highest
standard of living for the greatest number of
people, not to create wealth for a privileged few.
Ö Duties = Obligations, Commitments, and
Responsibilities
