ODD DAYS : The number of excess days after the exact weeks in a

time period is called ODD DAYS. Eg : September has 2 odd days as

30-7 = 4 + 2 days . Hence 2 odd days. In a year there are 52 weeks
and 1 odd day.
All years divisible by 4 is a leap year and every leap year has 366
days and hence 2 odd days.
All centuries are leap years only and only if divisible by 400. Hence
1900 , 2100 are not leap years.
100 years = 76 ordinary years + 24 leap years
= (76 * 52 weeks + 76 days) + (24*52 weeks +24*2 days )
= 5200 weeks +124 days = 5217 weeks + 5 days (Odd)
Hence 200 years contain 10 and therefore 3 odd days. 300 years
contain 1 odd day and 400 years contain 0 odd days
1. On which day of the week does 30th May, 2003 fall ?

Counting the number from 2000 Januray1st, we get

2000 + 2 years (01&02) + (1st Jan – 30th May, 2003)
0 Odd days + 2 odd days + 10 odd days (J-3; M-3 ; A – 2 ; M –2)
0 Odd days + 12 odd days = 1 week = 5 odd days . Hence The day
is the 5th odd day which is a Friday . Hence 30th May, 2003, is a
Friday
2. What was the day of the week on 16th July , 1776 ?

1776 = 1600 + 100 + 75 + days of 1776

1600 + 100 = 0 Odd + 5 odd = 5 odd days
75 Years = 18 leap + 57 normal = 18 * 2 + 57 * 1 = 93 odd days
= 13 weeks + 2 odd days
Total odd days up to 1775 = 5 + 2 = 7 odd days = 0 odd days.
1776 is a leap year . Therfore jan+feb+mar+apr+may+jun+jul =
198 days = 28 weeks + 2 odd days.
Therefore the total number of odd days = 0 + 2 = 2. Hence
Tuesday .
3. Prove that any date in March of a year is the same day of the week
as the corresponding date in November that year ?

For proving this we need to show that the number of odd days
between 1st March and 1st November is 0
The number of days from March 1st to Oct 31st is 241 days . Hence
35 weeks and hence 0 odd days.
Thus 1st March will be on the same day as that on 1st November.
5. The last day of a century cannot be -----------.
a. Monday ; b. Sunday ; c. Wednesday : d. Friday : e. Tuesday

100 years contain 5 odd days . Hence the last day is Friday
200 years contains 3 odd days . Hence Wednesday. ]
300 years contains 1 odd days. Hence Monday is last day.
400 years contain 0 odd days . Hence Sunday .
This cycle is repeated . Hence Tuesday cannot be ever a last day of
any century.
5. The 25th birthday of Ram was on 8th March, 1988, which was a
Monday. What day of the week will be Rams 26th birthday ?

Rams 26th birthday will be in 1989. 1988 is a leap year . But the
birthday falls after Feb 29th. Hence the number of odd days from
8th March, 1988 to 8th march, 1989, is 1. Hence his birthday, 29th
March, 1989, will be a Tuesday.
6. Which year will have the same calendar as that of 2001 ?
a. 2005 ; b. 2004 ; c. 2002 ; d. 2008 ; e. 2007

The process to find the similar calendar to 2001 is to

find the sum of odd days in each year from 2001 till it
makes a total of 7. Then the next year will be similar
year.
2001 – 1 ; 2002 – 1 ; 2003 – 1 ; 2004 – 2 ; 2005 –1 ;
2006 – 6 . Now the total no of odd days is 7. Hence
the next year , ie. 2007 will be the same as that of
2001. Hence e.
7. The first day of a century year cannot be a ----------------.
a. Tuesday ; b. Monday ; c. Thursday ; d. Saturday ; e.
Wednesday
Lets us consider 100, 200 , 300 and 400 years .
In 100 , we have 5 odd days. So Friday is the last day and hence
Sunday the first day.
In 200 , we have 3 odd days . So Wednesday is the last day and
hence Sunday the first day.
In 300 , we have 1 odd days. So Monday is the last day and hence
Sunday the first day.
In 400 , we have 0 odd days. So Sunday is the last day as well as
the first day.
Hence Monday cannot be the first day of a century.Hence b.
8. If today is Wednesday, what day will it be 1 year and 10 days
from today. ?
a.Monday ; b.Tuesday ; c.Wednesday ; d.Sunday ; e.Data Invalid.

Since the year is not given , it is not possible to determine the day
for want of knowledge of leap year or ordinary year. Hence
cannot be determined. Hence e.
9. The first republic day of India was celebrated on 26th January,
1950. What day it was ?
a. Tuesday ; b. Wednesday ; c. Thursday ; d. Friday ; e. Monday.

Starting from 1600 , 1950 = 1600 + 300 + 49

1600 has 0 odd days. 300 has 1 odd day.
49 has 12 leap and 37 ordinary years. Hence 12*2 + 37*1 = 61 = 5
odd days.
From 1st Jan, 1950, tp 26th Jan, 1950, we have 5 odd days.
Hence the total of odd days = 0 + 1 + 5 + 5 = 11 = 4 odd days.
Hence Thursday. Therefore c.

1988 is a leap year and hence has 2 odd days. Sasi’s birthday of
