Instrumentation and Control System
(I & C)
 Instrumentation is the branch of
engineering that deals with measurement
and control.

  Control System is a system that manages,

commands or regulates the behavior of
devices or other systems.
I & C Dept. scope of work

 Establishing measurements, control and shutdown

philosophy.

 Providing basic and detailed engineering documents

required for purchasing, installation and commissioning.

 Establishing control system such as:

1. Distributed Control System (DCS)
2. Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA)
Performed Activates in “I & C” Dept.

Process Measurements

Process measurements are sensors on pipelines,

vessels and tanks which observes the status of
the fluid.

 Process Measurements
 Final Control Elements
 Control Systems
Final Control Element

 The final control element exerts direct

influence on the process line.

 Types of final control element:

- Control Valve
- Shutdown Valve

Figure 27 – Control Valve

Control Valve
 A Control valve is used to regulate the flow in
pipelines.

 A Control valve is divided into

two parts which are:
1. Actuator
2. Body

Figure 28 – Control Valve

Control Valve

 The actuator is used to supply necessary force

to the valve.
 The body is in direct contact with the flow.

Figure 29 – Globe Valve

Shutdown valve

 It is used in safety systems.

 In case of failure, it closes and isolates the
process.

Control Systems
 Control Systems play an important role in
manufacturing and production
 Examples of Control System are :

SCADA

DCS SIS

Control
System
Distributed Control System (DCS)

 A Distributed Control System is a control

process which connects sensors, controllers
and workstation together.
 It is used in :
1. Oil Refinery
2. Petrochemicals
3. Electric Generation Planets

SCADA System
 “SCADA” system stands for Supervisory
Control And Data Acquisition.

 It enables users to collect data from one or

more remote areas.

Safety Instrumented System(SIS)

 The “Safety Instrumented System” is a system which

takes the process to a safe state.
 It exists with the “DCS” but works independently.
