INTRODUCTION

 The touch screen is a display that can

detect the presence and location of a
touch within the display area.
 The term generally refers to touch or
contact to the display of the device by a
finger or hand.
 Touch screen can also sense other
passive objects such as stylus.
TECHNOLOGY

 A touch screen is an input device that

allows users to operate a PC by simply
touching the display screen.
 The display screen have a sensitive glass
overlay placed on it and user can give
desired input by touching it.
 A touch screen is based on CRT
technology that accepts direct onscreen
input.
There are various
technologies used in touch
screens, some of them are:
 Resistive
 Surface Acoustic Wave(SAW)
 Capacitive
 Infrared
 Optical imaging
 Dispersive signaling technology
 Acoustic pulse recognition

WORKING

 Working of touch screen is a result

of coordination of the following
main components used in it.
 Main components are:
 Touch sensor
 Controller
 Software Driver
panel with a touch responsive
surface. The sensor generally has an
electric current or signal going
through it and touching the screen
causes a voltage or signal change.
This voltage change is used to
determine the location of touch to
the screen.

Controller: It is a small PC card

that connects between the touch
sensor and the PC. It takes
information from the touch sensor
and translated it into information
 Software Driver: The driver is a
software that allows the touch screen
and computer to work together. It
tells the OS how to interpret the
touch event information that is sent
from the controller. Most touch
screen drivers today are a mouse-
emulation type driver. This makes
touching the screen the same as
clicking mouse at the same location
on the screen.
Development

 The development of multipoint touch

screen facilitated the tracking of more
than one finger on the screen.
 These devices also allow multiple users
to interact with the touch screen
simultaneously.
 With the influence of the multi touch
enabled iPhone, the touch screen market
for mobile is projected to produce 70
billion till the last of this year.
Advantages

 Touch screen gadgets have big

screen which is ideal for web
browsing, pictures and movies.
 Touch screen gadgets usually
have simple user interfaces,
which are more flexible.
Disadvantages

 Touch screen devices require massive

computing power and really a big screen
which leads to slow devices with low
battery life.
 Screen gets dirty very soon.
 Touch screen devices usually have no
additional keys and this means when an
app crashes, without crashing he OS you
can’t get to the main menu as the whole
screen becomes unresponsive.
Applications
 Public access: banks and financial
reporting, shopping mall directory,
public transportation schedule, ATM
machines, corporate information e.t.c.
 Entertainment: interactive computer
games, casinos.
 Government: military control system,
scientific research lab.
 Information system ,device controls,
customer self services, public
information system.
Future of the touch
screen technology
 Minimal power requirement.
 High internet accuracy and precision.
 Zero pressure touch and allows finger
scrolling.
 Allows 100% display output, picture
definition and color clarity.
 Low cost and excellent durability.
 3-dimension touch screen.
Conclusion
 Designers are trying to use touch screen
to simplify input commands for
unsophisticated users.
 Today a large share of population is PC
literate yet the touch screen has become
adopted by computer users of all
abilities because it is simple, fast and
innovative.
 In future there is no usage of mouse and
keyboards as they will be replaced by
touch screens.
