Activity : Coach me

Ashlee is very capable and competent. I like her work

attitude, and she gets along well with his colleagues.
However, she has a tendency to be last minute. Lately,
this has become more frequent and there has been
disgruntle amongst the team.

The problem with me is that have a soft spot for Ashlee

and tend to turn a blind eye to her faults as she produces
excellent work. I like to explore how I can manage her
more effectively as a manager.

Activity – coaching conversation (1)

You have been observing Chris since she joined your team. You are impressed
with her ability to handle deadlines in project and her go-getter attitude. Even
under tight schedules, she keeps things under control and is thorough in her
work, which is very important at the engineering site.

However, you do notice that she is not a team player and would pick and
choose people she helps. Others have commented about her lack of co-
operation and ‘mood swings.’

After coming back from the coaching training, you can’t wait to try your new
skills. What kind of questions would you ask her to raise her awareness?

Jack is a hard working Manager in your department. He is very conscientious

and dedicated. He is usually the first at work and the last to go home. Lately,
you noticed that he has been late for work and taking MC quite often.
When he is absent, his colleagues have to cover for him and one of them,
Nancy has been rather vocal with her displeasure of doubling up.
You decided to coach Jack before the situation gets worse or other team
members start complaining. You also like Jack to leave with two action steps
after the coaching session.
Activity – coaching conversation (3)

Chandrikahas very poor interpersonal skills. She is outspoken and would offer
her opinions in a critical way. In meetings, you observed that she interrupts
others when they are speaking. She is a competent manager and you like to
see her get along with others. You are also in a dilemma as you have a career
opportunity to send a high potential on an overseas assignment. Chandrika is
one of the two candidates who qualify. However, you have your misgivings that
she will not be culturally sensitive in the new country.

Coach Chandrika so that she’s aware of the issue and will commit to two action
steps after the session. You are also assured that you have identified the right
candidate for the assignment.

Oh Bama was promoted to Sales Manager a year ago. When he was a sale
rep, he was known to be result oriented and hard working. The HR Manager,
Roger has highlighted to you his concerns on the resignation rate from Oh’s
department. He is losing 30% of his staff. He also shares with you the findings
from the Exit Interview which described Oh’s management style as autocratic,
controlling and indecisive.
You now recalled Oh’s reasons for not delegating “If you need to get things
done, you got to do it yourself” and “it’s so hard to get good help nowadays”
Over lunch, your colleague in Marketing jokingly refer to Oh as a tyrant and
slave driver. “ .. not surprised that he lost another good staff today.”

How would you coach Oh Bama so as to raise his awareness and make the
commitment to change?

Kamalis habitually late. You have highlighted to him and he promised to come
to work on time. You also noticed that he has been taking long lunch break.
HR has just issued a memo on punctuality and you decided to use this
opportunity to coach Kamal to make the shift to better time management.

War Renseems to be overly meticulous and afraid of making mistakes. He will

go into great details, check and double check his work. As a result, he always
miss deadlines although his work is of good quality. His colleagues have made
nasty comments that he’s slow.

How will you coach War Ren to increase his self awreness?

Bill Gekhas been with the company for five years. He came in as a
Management Trainee and was in the sales department after his training. He
was promoted to Sales Manager after two years. Bill’s performance has been
good and his Manager has given him excellent rating. After covering trade, key
account and now trade marketing, he is demoralized when he sees his
colleagues promoted to senior managers. He felt he’s in a ‘dead end’ job and
his talents are now recognized. You also heard that he is talking to
headhunters.

So Ann rushes into your room. She seems flustered. You found out that she
was asked to do a presentation on how to introduce coaching into the
workplace as part of the company’s new leadership program. She has
attended a two day work shop on Coaching for Performance a month ago. The
presentation is tomorrow and she’s panicking as she says she can’t remember
what she’s learnt.
You thought that this is a great development opportunity for her and you
wanted to help her.
