 Unemployment - Meaning
vWhat is Unemployment?
In general sense, unemployment is a situation in
which those who are able and willing to work do

not get a job.

A person who is :-


1) Physically fit
2) Mentally sound
3) Well qualified
4) Willing to work


But does not get job, this situation is called as

unemployment

Unemployment can be broadly classified
under two categories:-

Measurement of unemployment
 Rate of unemployment is measured as below :


 = Labour Force - Employed X100

Labour Force

q Labour Force :-
Labour Force of the country consist of those people in the age

group of 15-60 years who are employed and those who are

unemployed and looking for a job.

Exclusion :


o Physically Handicapped
o Mentally Retarded
o Individuals who do not want to work


 Labour Force = No of employed + No of unemployed





 Types of Unemployment
1) Seasonal unemployment
Example : Beach lifeguards,

hotel and tourism,

Agriculture etc.

2) Structural unemployment

Example : Industries such as

mining, cassette etc.

3) Cyclical unemployment

Example : Retrenchment of employees

during recessionary economic phase



4) Technological unemployment :
Example : Replacement of workers

by machines, computers, Robots

etc.

5) Disguised unemployment


6) Underemployment
Example : MBA or Graduate

working at lower level


