R/3 Analytical Reporting
Evolution:
Info Systems (xIS)
 Pros
 Standard structures delivered with the system
 Limited OLAP capabilities and drill-down to transaction level
and documents
 Security in Standard Analysis

_ Exception reporting
 Cons
 Limited number of dimensions and
 Use of many structures (or high volumes) impact performance
 Standard Information Structures not always usable
 Level of effort to create and test Info Structures
 Security in Flexible Analysis is weak

5
BW Overview and Concepts
 BW is SAP’s entry into the Data Warehousing market. It is
designed to provide corporate reporting and Data
Warehousing solutions for SAP customers

 BW is an end-to-end data warehousing solution that uses

preexisting SAP technologies.

 BW is part of the strategic initiatives of SAP -

New Dimension Products and Business Framework

 BW is SAP’s answer to the limitations (product gaps) of the

prior R/3 reporting Information Systems

 BW is dynamic evolving product: BW Version started from

1.2 A and now the latest version is NetWeaver BI 7.0

8
BW Overview and Concepts –
Extraction from various sources
 Data Extraction - The BW extractors applied to the R/3
system add overhead to the OLTP system thereby
degrading system performance. However by virtue of
having the data available in BW, the client may be able to
eliminate the use of some OLTP reports and extracts which
could potentially reduce the overall impact.

 Delivered R/3 data extraction and staging components

utilizing application link enabling (ALE) and transaction
remote function calls (TRFCs)

 Non R/3 data can be loaded via flat files or with 3rd party
extract/transform/load (ETL) tools which rely on a BW
business application program interface (BAPI)

9
BW Overview and Concepts -
Transformation
 Data transformation - Although the collection of R/3 data occurs on
the OLTP server, data manipulation, cleansing and aggregation
occurs on the BW system.
 Administrator Workbench for developing, maintaining and
monitoring BW system
 Maintenance of Data Warehouse
 Logical source systems
 InfoSources
 InfoCubes
 Assignment of InfoSources to InfoCubes
 Scheduler
 Scheduling of extract jobs, once, periodically
 Grouping of extract jobs
 Load Monitor
 Monitoring of transfer and update
 Status display, load statistics
 Integrated meta data repository (technical data only)

10
BW Overview and Concepts:
Reporting
 Data presentation - User queries and reports are now hitting the
BW system therefore reducing the number of information
requests against the OLTP system CPU.

 BEx Browser works much like an information center, allowing

users to organize and access all kinds of information. Third-
party reporting tools connect with BW OLAP Processor through
ODBO (OLE DB for OLAP). Business Explorer Browser is a html-
based report catalog for corporate reports and user favorites.

 BEx Analyzer is Microsoft Excel with a BW add-in. Thanks to its

easy-to-use graphical interface, it allows users to create queries
without coding SQL statements.

BW Standard Business
Content:
 BW Standard Business Content: is delivered by SAP

 One of the BW's strongest selling points is its Business

Content.

 Business Content is a complete set of BW objects

developed by SAP based on predefined business roles to
support the OLAP tasks.

 It contains roles, workbooks, queries, InfoCubes, key

figures, characteristics, update rules, InfoSources, and
extractors for SAP R/3, and other mySAP solutions.

ABAP use
 ABAP use for BW focus from report creation to data
preparation and preprocessing functions during ETL process
in BW
 Six places during extraction, including creating custom
DataSources, enhancing DataSources, and data selection in
InfoPackages
 Six places during staging, including currency/units of
measure conversions, transfer routines, and update rules
 Four places during reporting, including generating system-
entered variables and the report/report interface
 Also used at Open Hub Service transformations, building
authorization values, process chains, and virtual InfoCubes
with services.
