WHAT IS QOS?
Quality of Service or QoS is a method of providing better service for selected traffic types over various types of packet-switched networks. The network medium used could be any one of several types of technology ranging from Ethernet to Wireless and Frame Relay networks. QoS provides a method for determining which traffic should be given priority on a network segment

INTRODUCTION
There are two primary drives behind the need for QoS policies. Convergence of Voice Video and Data Networks Differentiation between Data Applications Other reasons to use QOS: Stop sync. your employees from bugging you: My applications are sometimes slow. My video stream is jerky and the voice is out of

My voice calls sound bad at times. Blocking unwanted traffic such as P2P sharing, social network in totalities reigns. Security reason finding imposters programs on your network.

Why do we need it?

The primary function of QoS is to ensure that all technologies are getting the bandwidth they need to function at a desired level. One of the most significant expenses of organizations today is the internet connection. Because internet is irreplaceable and companies cannot maintain their activity without it even for the shortest time, they spend a lot of money to ensure their connection to the Internet is stable and will remain that way all the time. Furthermore they cannot rely on regular ADSL lines or cables like a regular customer but must buy ATM, Frame relay or direct Ethernet connection which significantly increase the monthly cost, both for security reasons and to avoid congestion when the lines load are high. For this reason they will try to save as much bandwidth as they can in order to save money. The way to do it best and with less disruptions to the network is using QOS

Functions of QoS
Predictable Response times Management of delay sensitive applications Management of jitter sensitive applications Control of packet loss when congestion occurs during a burst (note that continuous congestion means that the link is over-subscribed) The setting of traffic priorities. Dedication of bandwidth on a per application basis. The avoidance of congestion The management of congestion when it occurs, note that this is different from trying to avoid congestion, sometimes it is not possible to avoid congestion.

RESOURCE RESERVATION PROTOCOL ( RSVP )

Resource Reservation Protocol ( RSVP ) fits in with the IntServ model and is a signaling protocol that allows applications to request bandwidth and QoS characteristics and provides a mechanism to tell if the network can meet the demands. This mechanism uses a sort of 'scout' that checks out the network ahead of data transmission. Delay and Bandwidth can be reserved and flows can be signaled by the end station or the router.
