History
The UB Group was founded by a Scotsman, Thomas Leishman in 1857. At the age of 22, Vittal Mallya was elected as the company's first Indian director in 1947. After a year he became the chairman of the company. United Breweries made its initial impact by manufacturing bulk beer for the British troops During the 1950's and 60's, the company expanded greatly by acquiring other breweries. E.g McDowell helped it to extend its portfolio to wines and spirits business. Vijay Mallya took over as Chairman of the Group in 1983

Aviation
UB Group entered aviation sector in 2005 with the launch of Kingfisher Airlines Limited and was voted the ~Best New Airline of the Year~ within months of its launch. Kingfisher Airlines has captured an impressive market share and has established a niche identity for itself. Kingfisher Airlines is Innovations :
first and the only airline to offer in-flight entertainment on every seat in the domestic skies. India's first and only 5-Star airline and the only one to offer a premium first class service on domestic routes.

The airlines recently acquired 25% stake in Deccan Airlines. With the merger of Kingfisher Airlines and Deccan, the airline has low fares to premium fares and offers the maximum number of flights offered by any single airline network in India. The combined airline entity now connects 64 cities and has 484 daily departures.

Fertilizer
Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited is under UB Group's management. It has a manufacturing capacity of 2,17, 800 MT of Ammonia and 3,80,000 MT of Urea. The Company is a part of the UB Group with Group shareholding of 30% The Company achieved a turnover of Rs. 614 crores, up 9% over the previous year. Careful nurturing and astute management under UB ensured remarkable turnaround after the govt declaring it a Sick unit in 1990 One of the most efficient and profitable naphtha based urea producers in the country. Brands- MangalaUrea and DAP have a strong brand equity.

Research and development

Vittal Mallya Scientific Research Foundation (VMSRF) was established in 1987 Objective of developing newer and novel technologies that will have substantial application in industry and health care. Established collaborative links with some reputed research and academic institutions within the country and abroad. It is recognized by the Departments of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India and has an incredible list of credits to its name.
