BIOMES

WHAT IS A BIOME??- A biome is a collection of ecosystems sharing the same climatic conditions. For example, a desert or a grassland. A biome is defined by the complex interactions of plants and animals with the climate, water resources, the geology and soil types. THE VARIOUS TYPES OF BIOMES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Freshwater Marine Desert Rainforest Grassland Tundra

BIOMES
FRESHWATER
Freshwater Biomes account for one fifth of the area of the Earth and provides half of the drinking water, one-third of the water used for irrigation and nearly ninety percent of the worlds bath water. Freshwater is defined as water content with low salinity, usually below 1%. The biome consists of inland lakes, streams, gutters etc.. Both plant and animal life is supported by freshwater biomes. For example, algae and false ivy and leeches and diatoms.

BIOMES
MARINE
Covering about 70% of the Earths surface, the marine biome is the largest biome on the planet. The marine biome can be divided into oceans, estuaries and coral reefs. The oceans represent the largest and the most diverse ecosystems. The water in the marine biomes is usually salty. Millions of species of algae are found here along with many other aquatic plants. Animals such as mollusks and crustaceans are also found here.

BIOMES
DESERT
Deserts cover about one fifth of the Earths surface and are located in areas where rainfall is less that 50cm/year. Most deserts have a considerable amount of specialized vegetation and vertebrate and invertebrate animals too. Soils contain abundant nutrients and have little or no organic matter. Only few large mammals are capable of storing sufficient water and withstanding the heat. Deserts often provide less shelter for large mammals.

BIOMES
RAINFOREST
Rainforest are thick and wet forests. They get rainfall up to 250cm/year. There are two types of rainforests: Tropical and Temperate. The tropical rainforest is the Earths most complex biome, both in terms of structure and species diversity. Temperate rainforests receive up to 130cm of year every year. They have a much simpler ecology compared to tropical rainforests. Common animals found in rainforests are velvet worms and ringtail possums.

GRASSLANDS
Grasslands are areas with hills of grasses and wildflowers. Grasslands are found on every continent except the Antarctica. The roots of the grasses and the small plants make the soil rich in nutrients great for farming. Some grasslands are used for animal grazing too. They receive up to 76cm of rain per year. They are regions which are transitions between deserts and forests.

BIOMES
TUNDRA
Tundra is the coldest of all biomes. It is known for is frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients and short growing seasons. Dead organic material acts as nutrients. The two main nutrients found in the tundra biome are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is created by biological fixation and phosphorus is created by precipitation.
