Victoria Falls - Geology

Victoria Falls - Geology

During the Jurassic Period (150 - 200 million years ago) volcanic activity - resulted in thick basalt deposits that covered large parts of Southern Africa. As the lava cooled and solidified, cracks appeared in the hard basalt crust, which were filled with clay and lime. Erosion and the course of the mighty Zambezi River cut through these softer materials, forming the first of a series of waterfalls.

Victoria Falls - Geology

Over at least 2,000 years, the Falls have receded 8km upstream, as the Zambezi carved its way through Seven (7) Gorges. Gorges The historical geological formation of the falls can be seen in the dark basalt in the series of rocky gorges below the Falls. It is guessed that the Devil's Cataract, which is Cataract presently the lowest point of Victoria Falls, will eventually become the next gorge as the river continues to cut its way back upstream.

Victoria Falls - Forward

Both the Zambian and Zimbabwean adhere to the Joint Management Plan that they have developed. Zambia need to develop and implement policies and programmes that will enhance understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the victoria falls The Locals have to be involved in the management of the victoria falls if it has to be protected Tourists need to be sensitised on the geological part of the falls other than the hydrology only There is need for an holistic joint management approach for both Zambia and Zimbabwe to achieve the sustainability of the Victoria falls
