Topic: Applying Archimedes Principle

By: Sir Solehin

Previous Lesson
1. Pressure What is Pressure??
Pressure is defined as force per unit area P= F A

2.

Pressure in liquids
P=h g

Try This!!!
Push the balloon into the water. What do you feel???

Todays Activities:
1. Class activity to investigate the relationship between the buoyant force and weight of fluid displaced. 2. Group discussion on Archimedes Principles application.

What is Buoyant Force??

Buoyant Force is.

An upward force resulting from an object being wholly or partially immersed in a fluid.

What is the relationship between the buoyant force and the weight of fluid displaced??

Liquid displaced

Buoyant force

ACTIVITY 1 !!!
To investigate the relationship between the buoyant force and the weight of fluid displaced

From ACTIVITY 1..

ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE

ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE
State that, when an object is wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, it experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of fluid displaced.

ACTIVITY 2 !!!
Applications of Archimedes Principle

Group 1, 3 & 5

In group, find.. - The working principle - How Archimedes Principle was applied?

Group 2, 4 & 6

Hot Balloon
The hot air in the balloon displaces the surrounding air, which is denser resulting in a bigger up thrust that causes the balloon to rise.

Submarine
Has special compartments ballast tanks. In diving ballast tanks are flooded with sea water to increase the overall weight (higher than the buoyant force) When water is forced out of its ballast tanks, the submarine rises.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain Buoyant Force
The upward force resulting from an object being wholly or partially immersed in a fluid.

2. Relate buoyant force to the weight of the liquid displaced

BUOYANT FORCE = WEIGHT OF THE LIQUID DISPLACED (for an object which immersed wholly or partially in fluid)

3. State Archimedes Principle

State that when object is wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, it experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced.
